Show m CORINNE DAILY JOURNAL. Sunday Morning, May 21, 1871. BEW AUE OP PROCESSES. The" Salt Lake Tribune, on the rtrength of an article ou the subject by a Colorado newspaper, calls again for improved processes for reducing ores. Colorado has the most refractory ores in the world, and has been afflicted with new processes for reducingtbom at least twicQa year ever since 18C3. There were the Cook k Kimball, the Keitl the ; Crosby k Thompson, the Monnaie, the California, the Live Yankee, the Chlo-riuthe Bertola, the Peck, the Ivenyon, the Lyon, and the Bruckner, which we can' recall without an effort, none of them in use now but the Bruckner, and that by a single company on a small scale., Thousands and hundreds of thousands were expended in testing Colthese processes, and orado depends on the plainest kind of a stamp mill for the reduction of the mass of her ores. For perhaps ten per centum of the richest and most stubborn and difficult, she relies on an exact reduplication of the old standard smelting works at Swansea, only on a smaller scale. The process consists in roasting the ore in heaps on the ground, requiring some six weeks for the . operation, and then smelting and running it down into a matte in the oldest style of a furnace, the matte being sent abroad for separation. These are the processes, old as the hills, in general use in Colorado, and we do not look nor ask for anything better in Utah, unless, possibly, the Stetefeldt, or some furnace on the same principle should be" found a profitable caleiuer for some considerable class of ores, which is possible. By the way, we hear that Robbins k Co., at the mouth of Little Cottonwood, have complete works, built after the old country pattern. Let us have more of them, something known from hundreds of -years of experience to be adequate and reliable, if necessary, and give processes s and a wide berth. We have watched painfully at the delivery and death of, a score of them, and know whereof we speak. -- e, I to-da- y so-call- ed process-monger- . O - Important Revenue Decisions. Assistant "Attorney General Ilill has given an opinion, in which the Attorney General concurs, in answer to questions risked by ihe Secretary of the Treasury, holding that,, under the act of July 1870, Section 15, corporations must pay income tax on interest coupons of bonds issued between July, 1S71, aud also on dividends declared during the same period ; also, that Government otliccrs must pay an iucomo tax on their salaries during the last five months of 1800 on wheih no tax was reserved when their salaries were paid. The opinion overrules the decision of the Commissioner of Internal Revenue on all three points. The first will save a great sum of money to the Government. 1-- Tue Secretary of the Treasury, in his minimal estimates of receipts from revenue for the current fiscal year, estimated the customs receipts at $185,000, 000. The receipts from that source, however, have been much greater than had been expected, greater even than the customs receipts of any previous year in our financial historv. The to the first instant amount to $172,737,389.05, and, with the collections of the current and next month, it is safe to calculate that the revenue of the fiscal year from the sourcc referred to will reach $206,000,000, exceeding the estimates by at least $20,000,000. re-ceip- TniOgden Junction says ts we are pre- mature in asserting that the Judges of Utah are backed in their rulings on the constitution and jurisdiction of the courts of Utah, by the Supreme Court of the United States, and the President. We gave our authority for the one yesterday, and if the Junction don't believe we are right as to the other, it sholild have Bro. Hooper go on and get these obnoxious judges removed. That will test it, or possibly it hasTeen tested already. A Berlin correspondent has had an interview with Bismarck, who says Louis Napoleon's great fault is want of determination. He can never come to a quick decision. He has made blunders from the first. Bismark wished to negotiate with Napoleon after Sedan then he could have obtained terms, and could have remaiued master of the French. He has been, by his fatal want of decision, the greatest foe of his country. $ CURE FOR CANCER. At last it seems that a cure has been discovered for cancer. Although we cannot tell definately what it is, yet a very dear friend, who has been suffering under the terrible affliction about three rears, and during that time has tried everything of the kind under the sun, with but temporary, if any, relief, is encouraged to hope for full recovery after using this remedy some three weeks only. More than that, we learn through private sources that fifteen victims of this, heretofore, fatal ulcer are fast recovering, uuder the care of Dr. Bliss, of Washington, D. C. Dr. D. M . Bliss is one of the most eminent aud successful phvsicians at the National Capitol, and he has so much faith i the efficacy of this new remedy that he has sent his partner, Mr. Keen, to Ecuador, S. A., to procure a large supply of it. It is briefly described to us as a South American wood, called cundurango, from which a decoction is made by steeping or boiling, and drank. Its virtue, which would seem to be alterative, were discovered bv accident, and but latelv. If it shall prove equal to the curing of cancer, it must be invaluable in the cure of many other diseases arising from vitiated blood, scrofulous, veneral, etc., the worst, almost, to which flesh is subject. TELEGRAPHIC NEGRO TESTIMONY IN KENTUCKY. W Judge M. H. Gofer, of the Seventh Judicial District of Kentucky, has instructed the grand jury of his court to admit negro testimony. He says that negroes are citizens, and have the right to testify, if necessary .for their protection, in the enjoyment of the rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States to the citizens of the State. He savs he is bound by the clause of the State Constitution prescribing the oath of office to uphold the Constitution of the United States as the supreme law of the land. Judge Cofer was Provost Marshal General of Joe Johnson's army of the late Confederate States.
