"The women have been slow in discovering what racquet ball is, but I feel that someday soon the big boom will hit the area. "The first week of November, a state wide tournament will be held here and women players from all over the state will be in competition. Don felt that racquet ball is in the same position that tennis was five or six years ago. The sport is right on the edge of the boom. The thing that is desirable about racquetball is that youre never more than two steps away from the ball. In tennis youre forever chasing it to the back fence or the ends of the courts, but in racquetball you get about twice as much activity in less than half the time. A guy or gal can get a quick workout during lunch time where in tennis you barely get warmed up before its time to go back to work. Racquetball is quick and easy to pick up by beginners, where tennis takes some time before youre to the point that you can keep the ball in play long .enough where you can enjoy it." All in all there will be 13 divisions in our upcoming tournament," said Don, "The tournament will be sanctioned by the Utah Racquetball Club and the A.A.U. What this means in extra drawing power, 1 dont know, but we hope it means something. Divisions will include every age in men and womens competition. Trottier was at Brigham Young University when he picked up the sport of paddleball. Tennis has been my love all my life but when I found the sport of paddleball I picked it up and really began to like it. For quite some time I was an inactive racquetball player who played once or twice a year. But last fall a friend of mine and I began playing regularly. Trottier had moved to Corpus Cristy earlier but once the South Ogden courts were completed, he moved back as a member of the club. He was looking to change his profession, having been a professional librarian for the past 15 years. Before moving to Corpus Cristy he was director of the Weber County Library for seven years. I wanted to see if I could do something with my sports activities that I'd been involved with all my life. I took a serious look at racquetball and began studying up on it. I took some lessons and have thoroughly enjoyed the sport since," said Trottier. In May of 1979 he was named director of the racquet ball activities at the North Club. |
