Show Prep Cross Country year to be highly competitive By Keith Duncan competition among the six Region One schools sporting cross country teams looks to be one of the most ex- citing in years. We tell no favorite here. . The 1979 Bonneville returns as the defending region and state champion, but with a new coach and new faces they may be building a bit this season. Coach Blair Martineau is optimistic however and because of those feelings the rest of the region shouldnt take the Lakers for granted. Craig Galloway returns as Bonnevilles top ace. He finished among the top ten runners in the state cross country meet a year ago. Dont ever count the Sky View Bobcats out of anything. Coach Scott Tennis of Clearfield thinks team may be the northern-most one of the finest in the region. At Gearfield, Tennis himself has a pretty good nucleus to build around. The Falcons were victorious last week in a four-wa- y meet and looked impressive in winning the season opener. Dan Perkins, Ron Swallow and Mike Lyons are the three seniors that lead the Falcon onslaught. Layton may be building this year and thats not much to report at the time of this writing. This writer likes what be sees at Weber High. The Warriors have seven strong runners that can compete with anyone in the league. Young Sophomore Marshall Hislop comes from Valley Junior High School and hes the talk of the team. The talented young ace has yet to be beaten in practice runs, even by his own teammates. Transfer John Brassell and returning letterman Tracy Fifield give the Weber team some added power and strength. Roy has a strong group this season and they like their chances of bringing home a trophy this fan. Picking a favorite in this region race would be difficult, but well try to keep you posted on how they tare. Region & State lakers return as Bonneville returns as the defending Region One and state champion in the sport of cross country and the big question is, can they repeat their act? The Lakers have a new coach in IJlalr Martineau, who for the past few years has starred as a basketball player for Utah State University. Last season he in the basketassisted ball program and will do so again. Martineau says his top runner should be Craig Galloway, a senior, who will captain the team. He finished in the Top 10 of last years top cross country men and is expected to have another superbyear. During the summer months he finished in the Top 30 in Weber, marathon. In the States 13-m- r recent Labor Day KCPX run in Salt Lake City, Galloway touched the finish line fifth among some 3,000 runners in that event. n meets be has In the yet to be beaten and in fact busted Wayne Pintos record in course at Interthe three-mil- e mountain School last week. Senior, Tom Hanselman, placed high in the state meet and is also expected to have a great year. He placed in the Top 23 at the featured KCPX meet. ji n pre-seaso- Doug Kent, Brian Pollard, Dave Burnett, Dale Hunt and Tim Isom will also fuel the Laker attack this fall. Back to form the Laker line-up Blair Martineau. Falcons to figure heavy in title chase Third-yea- r Clearfield Cross Country coach Scott Tennis may have what it takes to go all the way in 79. And most would agree he deserves the top jewels. Tennis, ever since his arrival to Clearfield, has worked steadily to produce top graded cross country and wrestling squads. His formula of combining both discipline and hard grueling work has paved the way and established a foundation for his athletic teams. Tennis says his 79 kids are gutty and may not be the most, talented in the state. "All these kids are competition and they arent out there to let anyone down, said Tennis. Three seniors form the main nucleus of the squad. They include Dan Perkins, Ron Swallow and Mike Lyons. Coy Schofield, Danny Barnes, and sophomore Brian Wright should also be Coach Scott Tennis and Dan Perkins combine to make the Clearfield Falcons a good favorite in the 79 race for the region title. RAWN SWALLOW, strengths. Speaking on the sport of cross country, Tennis was quoted as saying, "The sport is terrific. It helps to build character in kids, helps them to set goals and builds attitudes. "After a while the sport becomes fun to them. Even though they get some razzing from their friends for running everyday, I honestly believe their friends are scared about all the work they might have to put in. The Falcons finished second in Region One last year and were ranked seventh when the state meet was finally concluded. On September 13 the Falcons will run against Ben Lomond and on September 20th they will run good against Bountiful. The 1979 region season gets underway on September against Sky View. 27 |
