EnoG, Sunmsrsft Props With two on, Brook Hicks stepped confidently to the plate and blasted an early high pitch, deep into right field home run. One more for a three-ru- n run crossed the plate before the inning was over and Sunset led Despite the effective relief pitching of Scott Frew in the sixth and seventh innings, Sunset allowed Weber a run in both innings and extra play was required. But Scott got tougher as the game wore on and just as the sun was dipping way down in the West, Gibbs, Perkins, Labato, and Wright began and finished their winning act. Thats what makes me a believer in this team, said Coach Chuck There just isnt any Vernon, Whether at weakness in the line-uthe top or bottom of the order, somebody is always coming through to make it happen for us. Vernon also commented on the closeness of the team, Most of these guys have been together all of their lives. From little league until today theyve played together and know what each is going to do. If you want to know my true feelings, I think theyre bound together like brothers. The players that compose this summer team will be the heart of the Clearfield High baseball team next spring, just as most of the prep teams By Keith Duncan Sunsets Norther Prep League team is for real, little or no question any more. Last Monday Weber visited Sunset with happiest thoughts of upending the league leaders, but when Danny Perkins crossed the plate when the sun was going down and the moon was ' appearing, it was Sunset once again in the victory column. g Sunset, with their close-ca4 victory, now stands clearly atop the remainder of the league with a perfect 0 record. This Thursday they will attempt to make it ten in a row as they travel to play Roy at 6 p.m. In the bottom of the ninth, Todd Gibbs collected a base hit and advanced to second on a bunt by Danny Perkins. Perkins beat the throw to first and Sunset was sitting pretty. Gibbs was thrown out at third when Mike Labato grounded out, but .Perkins moved to second. Perkins promptly stole third base the next chance he got and moments later scored the winning run on Guy Wrights hard-h- it RBI grounder. Weber had taken a 20 lead in the top of the fifth with some good hitting. Sunset however didn't die on the vine, but exploded like gangbusters in the bottom of the fifth. 4-- 2. Even Danny Perkins and Guy Wright could pitch if needed. Playing second has been Mike Labato, shortstop has been Shane Openshaw, and the third base position has been manned by Gibbs. Ready to play any position, and a starter in every game is Danny Perkins. Coach Vernon likes to call him his utility man. Doug Bills is another who can play anywhere as can Doug Bassett. Guy Wright, Vaughn Gardiner, Doug Dahl, and Louis Cain take over the outfield positions. ' Monte Frew assists in the coaching, and being a long time baseball fan and player himself, said, Theres no jealousy here on this team. Im really tickled with this bunch of kids, they play terrific together. I believe theyll transport this into high school play next spring and look good there also. Frew was particularly impressed with the strong pitching staff. He noted the valuable asset that Todd Gibbs had given the team with his strong pitching as of late. Montes own son Scott, and Hicks also combine to make the staff strong. n 'ft V. f y , BROOK HICKS blasted a three-ru- n tory over Weber home run last Monday night to help propell his Sunset team to a 5-- 4 vic- BROOK HICKS unloads pitch in Sunset-Bea- r ji - !?, " River duel.
