She stands only - 4 tall, and is barely 100 pounds, soaking-wet- , but she is a dynamo on the basketball court. She is only a sophomore at Roy High School, but has nailed down a starting berth on the varsity squad, and she is one of the scorers on the team. By Bliss Fullmer When Mrs. Sherri Gagon, with her three children, moved to Roy in 1978, hardly anyone took notice. After all, this is a city of twenty-od- d thousand 5- citizens, and four more people wouldnt make that much difference.' But the Gagons have made a lot of friends in our community, and in the sports world of Roy, a young star is most-consiste- COACH recognized Radene Nykeles Johnson talent for shooting and for handling the ball, and moved her into a starting assignment for the Royals She has been good for our team, said the coach, All of the girls like her.athlete. At Nykele is an Roy Junior, she played basketball, volleyball, and softball, and was a track star. She ran the 50, 100 and 220 yard dashes, and took first in the 440 yard run with a fast time of 6i seconds. She also competes in the high jump, and long jump, and is looking forward to big things in track at Hoy beginning to blossom. Her name is Nykele Gagon, better known on campus as Nicki, and at home as Kel. She was born on March 30, 1964 in Provo, to Ray and Sherri Gagon, who lived in in Orem. Nykele has a sister, Kori, who at 14 is a ninth-gradat Roy Junior High School. Her nine year old brother, Jeremy, attends school at Roy Elementary - d School. Kori isnt too interested in the world of sports, but Jeremy is flexing his muscles in basketball, soccer and football in Roy Recreation. High. parents Nykeles recognized athletic talents in their daughter, even as early as her fourth year of grade school. By the time she was a sixth grader, Nykele was honored by the Utah County Kiwanis Club, who presented her the Youth of America Award for excellence in athletics. Since that time, she has stocked a cupboard full of ribbons, trophies, and awards for her deeds in basketball, softball, volleyball and track. Miss Gagon can best be described with blue eyes as a dishwater-blond- e and total dedication in everything she NYKELE GAGON of Nykele is a shy little girl with great talent, and dedication to see her goals come true. She is deeply religious, and close to her heavenly father. She. seldom retires, without first reading the scriptures, and her church at tendance is near perfect. Keep your eyes on number 14 of the Royal Girls Basketball Team. Nykele is littlest and youngest of the lot, but she knows her basketball and can put that ball through the. hoop. Her heart is set on becoming the best at Roy High School. Roy. Redskins still undefeated in county 6 Roy Junior beat Sand Ridge last week to keep its 10-- 0 league record intact, while the Scoprions s drifted to a 7 record with two games left to be played. n Sand Ridge played basketball for the entire game and was whistled for a bundle of fouls. The Scorpions actually beat the Redskins from the field (25 field goals to 22) but lost the ball game from the 62-5- 3-- win-los- man-to-ma- full-cou- rt where Roy Junior converted 18 of 30. The Scorp-ion- s converted 6 of 11 of their foul shots. Scorpion Richard Davis was leading scorer on the floor with 23 points and was supported by Lewis Meyer with 13 points, Jeff Durrand and Brett Loftus with six each, Jeff White with four and Darwin Cochran and Todd Vigil with two each. The Redskins were led by Reed charity stripe, Newey with 17 points, Darren Cutler and Tom Nigon with 12 each, Mike Harris with ten, Ryan Bluemel) with nine and Mike.Kempinger with two. Jon McKenna of Sky View Highs basketball team, Ricky Tanner of Weber Highs wrestling team and Karleen Peart of the Clearfield High womens basketball team have been awarded Sportstaculars Player of the awards, McKenna, who fouled Week out the Region One season opener against Weber and played poorly in his own estimation, scored 21 points, hauled 8 rebounds and handed out 3 assists in helping Sky View to a victory over Roy and bring the Bobcats their first Region One victory down 76-5- in 4 1980. Tanner has been out all season long with a nagging back injury but suited up last Thursday evening against Clearfield and pinned his Falcon opoonent is less than 40 seconds.
