Married in 1913 to Clyde A Coffey,, and they had seven children, which were raised on a farm near Hutchison, Kansas. During harvests, Gladys cooked for a threshing crew of twenty-fivplus her own children. Life was simple but rugged on 640 acres of dryland farm, but family closeness and good neighbors were signs of the times. Being enjoyeL$y friends and family over the years has filled the memory banfe TJifljjy times over. The song sessions around the home piano were a part of growing up for the children, and even now, the piano can be heard at her house. Gladys and her second husband, Bill Wasson were charter members in the beginning of the Clearfield Community Church, and she has been a faithful Christian person all of her life. Her actions shine like a beacon, and those that know her, love her as a friend. in the war zone at During WWII, she had four sons and two sons-in-lathe same time. And in spite of son Bobs ship being hit at Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941, and son John being a prisoner of the Germans in Italy in 43, all of her sons returned home to their families and a loving mom. Getting this little woman to reminisce about parts of her 87 years has to be a bright spot in a friends day. The early part of 1942 Clearfield and Hill Field, tells of open fields and sand that is now covered by homes, stores and streets, not even visualized in the early 40s. A stint in the powder magazines of Ogden Arsenal, handling the munitons of war, was tough on this little woman. When victory of WWII was won, she returned to being just a housewife. Keeping busy in church activities and Easern Star functions as chaplain, organist, bible bearer or interested party has been long enjoyable. At her advanced age and failing eyesight, it is a pleasant sight to see her in a long formal dress, proud of the job assigned to her. Now, a Life Member of Beth Arabah Chapter O.E.S. and Honorary Mom to most of the Clearfield members, help keep her young. Highlighting her week is a volunteer day at Davis North Medical Center, where some call her feisty, but most think of her as special. Having been a widow since 1961, days drag at times, until a new challenge calls her. She was a volunteer worker at the Weber Memorial Hospital for years, and friends made there remember her with affection. People coming to her home are received as friends because she has no foes. Many call her Grandma, mostly out of love for a little white haired woman. Gladys has seventeen grandchildren and twenty-tw- o great' grandchildren of her own. She keeps her own home, and does most of her yard work, loving her flowers most of all. Often seen walking to the store, drugstore and church, keeping spry at 87 years. She has three sons living nearby. Bob Coffey, now a retired Army Master Sgt. in North Layton, John and Merle in Clearfield. George lives in Denver, June Wasson Margaret in California, Dorothy in Indiana and a Nelson in California. The eldest son, Harold died of Typhoid fever in 1932 in Longmont, Colorado, when just eighteen years old. If love begets love, has any truth in fact, then Gladys is a true picture of that doctrine. Pride and loyalty are part of her make up, but humility and a strong Christian belief are her main qualities. e, cw w , step-daught- Gniniir(l Ylh)ir Giachino, four brothers and three sisters, Carl L. But, as the years have hurried by, that trip has held close memories for Carrie Gladys Aliphin. Challenge has always been a part of her life, so she became a teacher at eighteen in a small country schoolhouse in south-westeKansas. Having to walk six miles and wade a small stream three times and on arrival at school, had to build a wood fire to dry out and warm up. Some ot the boys were much larger than the teacher, but she could outrun most in the spring relays held at recess time. That running ability and a good switch, later in her life, kept her kids oriented in the correct way of growing w Harper Karen and Grant Hammon and their daughter ftis Snnrara!?
