It was a heartbreaking Region One season for Weber in many ways. Many picked the team to finish at the top of the rung. The Warriors did lose 5 games at one stretch by no less than 10 points. Two-poilosses came at the hands of Clearfield at home, and Roy at home. Layton just barely managed to beat theWarriors at home, after Weber defeated the Lancers on their home court. In the Weber was a victor over both Orem and Hillcrest, the two top finishers in Region Two. Vincent unstoppable Roger Vincents powerful jumping left handed shot has been described by some as unstoppable. The Falcons held 17 point leads twice in the early going of the second half. Drew Skeen, a junior, brought the Falcon zone defense out a ways when he popped several long jumpers from the outside. He finished with 10 points. Montgomerys 16 led the Warriors. Weber continued to battle back, but it was a Van Fuller shot at the buzzer that brought Weber to within 10, the closest theyd been since the second 4-- 4, 20-1- 1 32-1- 16-1- 16-1- quarter. SCOTT NYE, 59-4- 9 4-- Falcons to battle Cottonwood in first game of playoffs by Keith Duncan Clearfield enters the state playoffs for the fifth consecutive time this Saturday at the University of Utahs Special Events Center. Why are they there? Why did the 4-- A team do better than pre-seaso- n pickers supposed they would? Why are they rated fifth best in state? Coach Craig Hansen, in his first year at Clearfield, says its Unity and h '? Pfidg ' if bVfibl&sabdtlt1ff;titalklrig about unity, but with most teams that about all it is, is just talk. With these guys (Clearfield) they take it to heart. To see five guys playing together like that is a real joy, said Coach Hansen. Coach Hansen says when you break it down, the whole team is good, no one is the real superstar. The Falcons have rebounded well together, hit the open man and defensed well together. Teams are finding they cant just stop (Roger) Vincent or (Russ) Florence, the others can perform just as well, he said. Roger Vincent, Larry Read and Mark Wayment, all starters this year, were members of Coach Hansens 17-- 2 junior varsity squad a year ago. Also a member of that team was Gary Dixon, who was declared ineliable this season. Florence and Reid were usually starters with the varsity team last season. Coach Hansen credits all eight , seniors as great individuals. Every one of them have been great in their own way, theyll be missed when they leave. The three seniors that sit the bench most of the time, have to receive a lot of credit, they contribute so much to our program, : commented Hansen. Coach Hansen, who performed in a Clearfield basketball jersey in 1963, his graduating year said it was always his dream to become a head basketball coach. Now he is the third in the history of Clearfield High' School. He succeeds a couple of greats in Marcus Garrett and Roger Reid. Coach Hansen is one who enjoys special things, such as the spotlight that is used to help introduce players. Weieiieves fhating1 as tarter onlhe team is an honor and wants everyone battling for one of those positions. Im grateful for a lot of support this season, but I have to give the parents an extra amount of gratitude for the way theyve supported this team. Everyone of them have gone out of their way to help and Ive never heard a negative thing from any of them. All I can say is thanks, said Hansen. Hansen has also been flattered with the support of the studentbody and administration. He noted in the Brigham and Bonneville games that the Clearfield side outnumbered the other side, even though both games were played away. Theres a lot of champions on this team. Guys like Scott Nye and others. Scott could probably be starting with another club, but is not afraid to come off the bench and fill in the gap when needed. Another is Mark Wayment. If you dont see the games, youll never see the good things that Mark does. Hes one of our leading rebounders even though hes one of the smallest, said Hansen. Coach Hansen and his wife Joan live in Kaysville. They are the parents of three children, Ryan 7, Amber 5 and Robyn 2. MARK REID in helped Clearfield win.
