Every school can name someone who didnt make the roster, but played a vital role in the s record of the team. Kurt Bennington of Roy High School is such a person. Kurt had his great moments in four sports at Roy, but seldom made headlines. He was too busy winning the big ones to worry about press coverage. Kurt was a speedster on the Roy track team, but not the fastest. He was a marked man on the football team, but not the star. He was a solid starter on the basketball team, but not a high scorer. He controlled center all-st- win-los- field with authority, considered a but wasnt in baseball. But when the award for Most Valuable Senior Athlete was given, Kurt Bennington was the undisputed king. Kurt, the son of Norman and Marilyn Baker Bennington, was bom on November 3, 1959. He is the third of four boys born to the Benningtons. Lynn, 24, is a senior at Weber State, where he is majoring in physical education. Blake, 23, works for Smith Food King and is the only married one of the four brothers. Bart, who will be 15 in July, starred for Roy Junior High School and shows a lot of promise for future years in athletics. Kurt, has always been active in sports. He was a star pitcher on the blue-chipp- fitlM' With I I er baseball team all through little league; a star running back in football since he was eight; a super guard in basketball during the same little league years; and was always the fastest kid in his class. Through Coach Harry Hall, Kurt helped his Roy teams win a lot of little league championships.. Kurt continued his winning ways through Roy Junior High School and lettered in all four sports in his sophomore year at Roy High. As a junior, he cracked the starting lineup in football as a defensive back and was number six man on the basketball team. He was also a regular on the baseball team, and won top honors in the Region One track meet. In his senior year; Kurt was first team in football, basketball, and baseball in his old center field spot. He started out strong in track, but tendonitis in his knees haunted him. He qualified for state in the 220, but was ' unable to compete. The coaches at Roy High School are high on Kurt Bennington. Track Coach Dan Sheffer called Kurt one of the hardest working kids I ' ever worked with." Coach Sheffer went on to say that Kurt had a lot of natural acability, but most of what he work." hard from came complished Coach Ernie Jacklin cited Kurt as a "very dependable and outstanding young man, He figured in our success for three years at Roy High," said Jacklin. Ted Smith, Roy Basketball Coach, called Kurt a clutch player. He played a key role in all of our close ball games, Smith said. I still recall how he kept us in the He game against Brighton at State. is the hardest working kid we ever had, added the coach. I have strong feelings about Kurt said Baseball Coach Bennington, Fred Thompson. I coached him in sophomore basketball, as an assitant football coach and had him all to His unselfish myself in baseball. attitude was an inspiration to me. He made me a better coach by the fine example he set. I learned from him, concluded Coach Thompson. Harry Hall was Kurts little league coach in every sport for most of his early years. He thinks of Kurt Bene one of my nington as favorites. What he lacked in ability, he made up in courage and heart, said Harry. Coach Hall also entered Kurt in a lot of junior Olympic track meets and young Bennington won his share of races. And now it is my turn. I rub shoulders with a lot of athletes on my beat as a sportswriter, and I meet all kinds. I endorse everything that has been said of Kurt Bennington. Kurt expects to be called soon after his 19th birthday in November. I am sure that he will apply the same 110 per cent effort in his service to God, as he has over the years in athletics.
