To secure as much information as possible regarding a combined policef ire department, and to examine first hand the public safety buildings, including any separate fire station buildings We were very much impressed with their program, reported Mayor Townley, and would like to give the idea further study for possible local application Before leaving Sunnyvale, we had the opportunity of witnessing the combined force in action when a fire broke out in a commercial building, exResponse time plained the mayor was excellent and departmental morale seemed superior. The combined force operates with considerably less people and with slightly higher pay The basic idea behind Sunnyvales concept is to provide effective fire and police protection while at the same tune being able to respond to the rapid growth of the city. The city does not have police officers or fire fighters per se Each officer hired must go through both police and fire academies and receive the appropriate credentials for each Each officer is expected, on a rotating basis, to be involved in fire protection and police protection This concept die opportunity of minimal man- af-tm- nmg while at the same time pro lding a high level of response and cov erage throughout the community Assistant City Manager, Thomas F' Lewcock, of Sunnyvalle noted, We have many times compared the total number of personnel we have involved in police and fire with other snnilarily sized cities in California and elsewhere in the country and have consistently found that we have far fewer people per capita than other cities do At the same time, our fire loss and crime rate is far below the national average, and our fire response and crime clearance rate is far above the national average The mayor, fire chief, and police chief also examined one of thiee fire station buildings during their visit Mayor Townley estimates the cost to be substantially less than the fire station previously considered by Clearfield City, possibly by as much as 50 Plans and specifications have been requested for consideration by the Clearfield City Council If these The Clearfield Chamber of Commerce is looking for entries m this year's annual 4th of July parade.
