Show athletes At the NINTH AND TENTH graders of the Clearfield Recreation basketball program fight for a rebound. Halle ffmmrRIfo girls 4A basketball tournament, last week, Iftalked with a Salt Lake City Sportswriter, named Linda, about the future of athletics for girls m Utah I casually mentioned that basketball for girls was growing and might one day rival the boys game I hope not, said Linda, defiantly. Then she went on to describe what had happened to the game and partt, where she icipants in the had reported sports for ten years. Girls basketball in the Mid-weis really big, she explained. In some cities and towns it boys basketball Basketball, itself, is great, but so many of the girls have become crude and coarse in their pursuit of the game . . Their language had become very offensive, and I surely didn't appreciate their spitting on the floor, and doing other things unbecoming of a woman I would hate to see that atmosphere come to Utah, she concluded. Linda is sports-mindewith just a and touch of tom boy in her make-up- , very knowledgeable. She is new. to Utah, and is not LDS, if that means anything She has no axe to grind in her opposition to the game environment 1 cant agree with my friend Lindas assertion that girls basketball would not be good for our state and our girls I can envision the growth of the sport in Utah, but I dont think it will have that kind of influence on our gals. I doubt that we , the people of Utah would let it happen. I am sure there are, and will be isolated cases of unlady-lik- e conduct in the sport, but I cant believe the game will become R rated. Mid-wes- out-dra- . Clearfield lost its second game in the girls 4A basketball tournament last week and had to settle for fourth place. The Falcons opened the tourney with a 6 win over Granger, and Hillcrest may have been in anticipation of meeting Skyline on the third day. The Huskies of Hillcrest scored in the last eight seconds to destroy Clearfields hope of its second consecutive state championship. The Falcons played Bountiful on the third day, and then clobbered the East High Leopards to take fourth place in the sixteen-teatourney 54-2- over-lookin- g machines, and that ball takes some crazy bounces at times. The team favorites Viewmont, Skyline and Orem cherred madly for Hillcrest to beat Clearfield That in itself is an honor for the girls to ponder for years to come. Every team feared the explosive power of the Clearfield Falcons, and was happy to see them Jackie Beene won the individual side-tracke- scoring honors of the week-lon- g tournament She scored 76 points in four games. Her nearest competitor was Suzanna Crowell of East High School, with 67 points, and Sue Daw of Skyline with 64 points Clearfield had to settle for fourth place, but as Margo Jones put it, There are a lot of schools in Utah which would be happy with a fourth place finish in the state t rnament 26 CLEARF1 ELD The Falcons shot an even 50 percent m downing the Granger Lancers in the first round of play. Clearfield got balanced scoring from Jackie Beene (16), Laura Bloxham (9), Kellie Sherrod (8), Joyce Anderson (7), Denise Russell (6) and Karleen Peart (6) Clearfield held Granger to just field goals in 41 attempts. HILLCREST Clearfield led If last weeks tournament is any kind of a barometer of girls basketball, we have nothin to fear in Utah. I saw nothing undesireable m six nights of fierce competition between girls of every size, shape and color. I interviewed a lot of the girls, and took some pictures. They all seemed to be kids. good, clean-cu- t Let me tell you about one pretty young thing who has been touted to be the best basketball player in all of Utah. Her name is Jackie Beene of Clearfield. Jackie, a three-yea- r started ifi basketball and volleyball, is'-also a track star. In her three years at Clearfield High, her teams have won several region titles, and one state championship. They placed in basketball all three years, and twice in volleyball in state competition. In track, Jackie won first place in the state 220 yard dash, and last year set a new record for the 100 yard dash. She holds the record in thOO, 220 and 440 yard dashes in the Region Two. She is expected to do great things in track in this, her senior 10 44 15-1- 2 in the first but 3 at half-timthen allowed a Hillcrest come-bac- k quarter and 30-2- e, that would eventually beat the Falcons. The Huskies trailed by only two points at the third quarter mark, and tied the game with 2.40 left in the game. The Falcons regained the lead with a foul shot, at the two minute mark, and "Kepi the YeafFMHtiF'lMf" Huskies scored with just eight seconds to play. The Falcons called time out, and set up for one sure to shot. Jackie Beene took the inbounds with pass, and was fouled at mid-coufour seconds to play. Jackie has been deadly at the line throughout the season, but couldnt ge the ball to go down, and Hillcrest had its biggest win of the year, There is no one I would rather have at the line, in such a situation, said Coach Margo Jones, after the game, but I guess it just wasnt meant to go in.
