However, unlike high blood pressure and nervous tension, the diagnosis and treatment of rising mill levies are quite straightforward. So let us begin at the beginning with a diagnosis of What is a rising mill levy?. The word mill come from the Latin and French one mille meaning thousand. Levy simply means the amount raised or taxed. A mill levy is the amount of tax money raised for every one thousand dollars in assessed value. (Assessed Value times Mill Levy equals Property Taxes Charged). In Weber County the assessed value placed on property is calculated as 20 percent of the 1972-7- 3 market value as determined by the County Assessor. If the mill levy is 90 mills and the assessed value of a home is $10,000, the property taxes will be $900 (90x10). A rising mill levy may be more commonly known as pursitis, a pain in the purse caused by contracting purse strings, or mill stones, a hernia of the neck muscles caused by carrying heavy financial burdens. Regardless of the name the symptoms are a flushed complexion, cold sweat, shortness of breath, heat under the collar, back ache and a collapsing wallet. As stated earlier, the cause and, consequently, the treatment of a rising mill levy are quite A demand for more property tax revenues by local governmental agencies and organizations is the one and only cause. A higher demand for revenues may result from inflation,- higher costs for providing existing services, or from expanding services. In this period of the rising Inflacession, mill levy is normally caused by the increased cost of doing business. Before discussing cures, the What can I do about it? we should talk briefly about how a mill levy is created. (This information is available from the County Auditor). Find out who is responsible for setting the budget and attend the budget hearings to find out what services are being provided at what cost. Only then can we tell our elected officials what we do and do not want in the way of services. This process may be slow and, at times, frustrating, but there are no quick and easy solutions that will not result in as much pain as they relieve. We can not use an axe in our attempt to drain off the excess fluids of an abcessed and swollen budget. WRANGLER 5280 S. 1900 W., Roy - Tel.
