Show CLEARFIELD COURIER, Nov. 22, A lot to 1978, Page 2 be thankful for During this Thanksgiving season, some may wonder if is anything to be thankful for. With wars, strife, economic problems, the dimishing dollar on world markets, crime on the increase and the nations morality at a new low, there seems to be too much wrong to see anything right with the world. Peoples paychecks are not getting any larger with inflation racing ahead at a faster rate than ever before. Human relationships are truly the only lasting happiness in this life, and the person who has people caring about him is rich indeed. This is one thing that one should be thankful for at this time of year. Health and the vigor to live each day, whether boring or not, is yet another blessing in our lives. There are so many in this world that do not realize how lucky they are to have a whole body, but just complain when they dont have a physique like Farah Fawcett or Paul Newman. Others would give everything they have in this life to be able to even see the beautiful colors of the autumn or the renewal of life in the spring. Symphonic melodies escape those who have not been blessed with hearing, while others complain that that jet plane is just too noisy to tolerate. The rights and freedoms that we as citizens enjoy are also a blessing that our forefathers hoped that we wouldnt forget, but unfortunately too many of this generation have forgotten the blood shed by their ancesters. The bicentennial helped many all year long to learn just what these early settlers went through, but by 1978, are we again forgetting what was learned then? As just exercised, our right to vote and select our leaders is precious. Although many argue that their vote does not count, the close race this year for the county commission seat could have been decisive instead of having to cost tax payers more money with a recount. Yes, there is a lot to be thankful for this autumn time. It nay take a little longer to think of these blessings amid all of our problems, but that doesnt mean they dont exist. tery. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, is conservatively projected to cost upwards of $40 billion a year. No matter what final form it takes, you can bet it will carry a hefty price tag. There may be legitimate need to reappraise and improve health care delivery systems in this country. But a new $40 billion federal program would be fiscally irresponsible and completely out of touch with the mood of the people. Supporters of comprehensive national health care argue that it could be funded through hikes in Social Security and payrole taxes. But few Americans, if any, want their take home pay I j shrink any more, especially in view of the massive Social Security hikes scheduled for January. If businesses are required to pay for their employees health insurance, they will be forced to pass their increased costs on to the consumer in the form of higher prices. There is something seriously wrong with the assumption that the federal government can provide health care more efficiently than the private sector. That flies in the face of our sad experience with other federal programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid. Rather than good, efficient service, these programs are replete with red tape, fraudulent claims and general consumer dissatisfaction. I firmly believe that any effective program for dealing with the lealth care needs of the citizens of this country must incorporate the fundamental principles of competition and free enterprise. Competitive forces help to regulate the cost and quality of health care. A consumers freedom to choose the best services for his money is an important motivation for doctors, hospitals and others. Placing the responsibility for the quality of health care in federal hands, however, promises only that consumers will pay higher taxes, but forfeit their for them. right to select the services that are cost-effecti- an alternative to the Kennedy approach, there are other proposals which focus on specific health care needs. For example, some senators are working on a plan to provide health insurance coverage for individuals who experience the catastrophic medical expenses that can lead to bankruptcy. Normal medical expenses would still be handled in that private sector, therefore building on the strengths of our current system. Tax credits could also be offered to individuals who purchase private insurance. As Quality health care at a reasonable cost is something that Americans want and deserve. Certainly, there are problems that must be overcome, but Congress muqt avoid any quick cures which, as the old adage suggests, are worse than the disease. There is something special in that family and I just wished last Saturday as I drove to Provo and back with them, that others could feel the closeness that I felt. We left early last Saturday, all bundled up warm for the BYU-Sa- n Diego State game. I borrowed a sideline pass from Coach Chow, the NBYU offensive coordinator and took plenty of pictures of Jimmy from the sideline. Jim didnt enjoy as great as afternoon as he did the week previous against Wyoming, but he did run for one touchdown and passed for another to lift the BYU team over the Aztecs, 21-- 3 and into the Holiday Bowl. . d EDITORS NOTE- This column is to become a weekly feature of our paper. Last Saturday I enjoyed the entire day, despite the cold weather and the chilly conditions that existed. Almost all the day was spent in the outdoors, temperatures dipping real low and snow being a big subject of the day. I priveleged to spend most of the day with a family that grown close to over the years, the McMahons of Utah. Roy, Jimmy their son, is in his sophomore year at Brigham Young University where he has recently taken over the head quarterbacking duties for the team. Its a story in itself how Jimmy has taken over the quarterback job and led the Cougars to the Western Athletic Conference Championship. Jim will be coming back to Roy this weekend" ancfat that tune well get together and get the inside story. Last year thev made the same trip which they say was unforgettable. Memories that will last a lifetime, and it seems that every day something new takes place that all can get excited about. Jimmy was Star at Roy The first time I met Jimmy and saw him perform. I had no doubt in my mind that he was headed for a super career, barring injuries. He was a junior at Roy High the year we got to know each other and he was the Royals star quarterback. On the basketball court he started and was a star most of the time. He was Coach Fred Thompsons ace on the pitching mound. I missed his senior year in high school, the year that he really made the headlines. Last year was missed also when Jim performed as a punter for the BYU team. Injuries havent hampered the Cougar quarterback to the extent he couldnt suit up, but team doctors do say that Jim will undergo surgery this winter because of problems he is having with his knees. The operation and recovery is expected to take about six weeks. Mr. McMahon in my opinion is the biggest fan of Jimmy in the family. He is extremely proud of his son and attends every game if possible. Hes known to be early for games, something like an hour and a half. He often gets some extra jibb'ng from the rest of the family because of his early e visit to Jimmy and sees arrivals. He makes his tickets are all in order. The trip to Oregon was rewarding since McMahon entered the game late and lifted the Cougars to a victory over Oregon, The Have you ever noticed how Thanksgiving dinner has a habit of growing? I usually begin by saying, "I think we should keep Thanksgiving simple this year. We are all too heavy. We spend a fortune with the price of groceries and its just a lot of work. I spend days preparing and maybe we spend twenty minutes a the table. About a week later Im sitting down to plan my menu and make a grocery list when Ray calls on the phone and asks what I am doing. I tell him and he says, Youre planning on hot rolls and butter of course? Of course, I sigh. Dont you think pumpkin pie is enough? It is silly to have three kinds of pie like we have in the past. Yeh, I guess it is, but if were only having one kind of pie, lets make it apple. Everyone enjoys apple." That is everyone who doesnt prefer pumpkin or cherry, I think. I must admit that Im feeling abused. Pumpkin pie is my favorite! I decide Im having a simple dinner with two kinds of pie. Later that evening Ray, my married son, calls to visit. During the course of our conversation, he mentions he can hardly wait for scalloped oysters. He loves them. Now I am having a simple (?) dinner with two kinds of pie and scalloped oysters During the next few days Kitty rushes in after school saying, Only one more week until Thanksgiving. I can hardly wait for cherry pie. I know you havent made cherry pie since last Thanksgiving. You dont have to beat me senseless. I know when Im whipped.
