Show 14 THEC1TIZEN says that' no more than 150 shooters should go . there and expect to get ducks. This is not very encouraging, because all of a thousand hunters had planned this trip from Salt Lake, Ogden, Brigham City, Logan and other surrounding cities and farming districts. Memberships in gun clubs are high and those memberships are limited to a few shooters, so hundreds of would be hunters are forced to remain home for the lack of a good place to go. The government has not started on the Bear river dike as yet. In looking over this field it appears, and it is the opinion of those acquainted with the grounds, that the proposed dike should cross over beginning at Willard Bay. This would keep out all the salt water and would back up the fresh water and cover a district which at the present time is producing most of our sick ducks. Duck disease kills more ducks than do the gunners, and this big item should be taken into serious consideration. The Willard Bay district is dry and now would be an opportune time to throw up a dike. Commissioner Mecham warns the boys to keep within the law. A days ducks and only kill bag is twenty-fiv- e what you can eat. Wait until it is the proper time to shoot. No one can hit a duck in the dark and shooting at that time only scares the birds from the sloughs and the entire days shoot is spoiled for everybody. . LOOKS GOOD Secretary Lowe of the State Republican committee, says that, judging from reports coming to headquarters in the Hotel Utah, Utah will go Republican by a bigger majority than ever in the history of the state. Evidently Lowe is trying to break a state record. A DUMB BOY, taken in an airplane recovered his speech. How about taking Tom Heflin a few feet Louisville Courier underground? Journal. ODONNELL & CO. He, tore into the Republican party rough shod at Omaha, assailed them for their whispering campaign and accused them of spending millions of dollars in malicious propaganda. Colleagues Disturbed Much has been made of the Governors personal magnetism both before and immediately after his nomination. His supporting colleagues are now disturbed by the readiness of the candidate to answer all personal attacks and constantly raise the religious question. Is the Governor getting so desperate that he feels he must accuse the Republican National Committee of slandering him on every turn? He intimates directly and indirectly that all those who are denouncing him for his religious connection or for any other reason are the agents of the Republican National Committee and that they are doing what they are under the direction and All knowledge of Herbert Hoover. this in spite of the fact that Mr. Hoover, many weeks ago, and before Governor Smith made any public statement, sincerely pleaded for religious tolerance. He was fully cognizant of the fact that his religion would be a factor in the campaign when he was nominated. In spite of the fact that Mr. Hoover has pleaded for religious tolerance at every opportunity and is endeavoring, so far as is within his power, to place the campaign on a high plane, Governor Smith continues to accuse him and his committee. Governor Smith knows the attitude of his opponent. His common sense tells him Mr. Hoover would not stoop to the things he is accusing him of. Governor Smith is intelligent. He knows no sensible person would hold him responsible for all the utterances his sympathizers might make. His opponent too is being maliciously slandered but is wisely ignoring it and we cannot help but feel that the Governor would do far better for himself if he would stick to the issues before the people instead of holding himself up as a mar- tyr. Religion No Bar We have said before, and we reiterate it again Governor Smiths religious affiliations do not bar him from being President of the United States and no one should vote against him for this reason. There is only one question before the people and that is the merit of the two candidates. Which one is the best fitted, through years of experience, training, business acumen, knowledge of national and international affairs to be President of these United States? That is the only question for the people to answer. Senator Borah is to be commended on his speech at Bowling Green, Ky., last week, when he wisely reminded the people to keep their minds on the real issues involved; that the personalities will die with the campaign. That campaigners and others who are today shouting lies and slanders at one another will be good friends after the election is over and settle down to better business. The people must use their best judgment and common sense. Every four years we go through the same thing. The campaign may be a little more bitter this year on account of the peculiar issues involved. What should concern the people, and what does concern the people is their job, and what they can do with the money they get from those . CLUBS clubs of the State are getting under way. A most intensive campaign will be waged by them, not only from the standpoint of general results, but they are also charged with the responsibility of new voters and first time voters. A unique plan of action for the latter has been worked out which is expected to be generally successful. Some thirty-fiv- e clean, active, young men have volunteered for county directors. They will be called together at an early date from all parts of the State by General Director Mont Ferry. They will have dinner at the Hotel Utah, at which time general instructions will be issued. Each club will have a charter and a symbolic emblem of flags, beautiful The Hoover in design and color. League individual badge is a marvel of beauty. Smith is elected to the presidency the Pope of Rome isnt going to control this country, neither are we going to have liquor. The Governor at Omaha frankly stated, and with emphasis, when asked if he believed liquor was the great issue. There is nothing the President can do about liquor, and he is dead right. It is the privilege of every citizen in the country to work for the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment but it is not the privilege of the President of the United States.
