Show THE CITIZEN A BIG WHEAT SUPPLY. CANADAS WHEAT crop is now estimated at 550,482,000 bushels against 440,000,000 a year ago. The September estimate of the United 'w States crop was 961,000,000 bushels against 73,000,000. The two countries, therefore, have an estimated production of 1,451,000,000 bushels of wheat, or about 150,000,000. bushels more than a. year ago. The figures point to an enormous export surplus of wheat in North America. The latest estimate places the crop of eighteen countries of Europe at 1,255,000,000 against 1,170,000,000 a year ago, an increase of about 4.7 per The remaining countries of Europe generally produce from 75,-- V 000,000 to 100,000,000, so at the maximum the European crop would not be more than 100,000,000 bushels larger than a year ago, exclusive of Russia. Against this is to be offset a considerable reduction in the rye crop which, for thirteen countries now reporting amounts to 73,000,000 bushels, while the crop of North America shows a decrease of 15,000,000 bushels, making a total reduction of bushels. This reduction in rye brings the American and European bread grain supply back to the percentage of the North American crop of 1927. Claims have been made that the two countries could supply the demands of the importing world. This cannot be proved by the figures. Adding the carryover of 123,000,000 bushels in the United States and 76,000,000 in Canada to the production would make a total supply of 1,651,000,000 bushels in North America. Allowing a carryover of 100,000,000 bushels in this country and none for Canada, domestic requirements of the two countries would approximate 850,000,000 bushels. The cent. 88,-000,0- 00 surplus would be an enormous amount of wheat, but the world import requirements are likely to be still larger, if Broomhalls estimates are to be increased toward the end of the season as in the past two years. There is, however, no question but what North America has an enormous amount of wheat now in prospect. Should the southern hemisphere produce but. an average crop the total supply will be large. That part of the woild is uncertain because of the tendency to drought, but unless the crops fall below average the world supply will be large in comparison with a year ago. Cheap wheat will stimulate consumption and Russia should figure as a buyer, so far as means and transportation will permit, so, the wheat will go into consumption, as it always should. HEFLIN SPEAKS AT HOME Senator J. Thomas Heflin celebrated his homecoming at Montgomery, hour Ala., with a two and one-ha- lf address against the Pope, Tammany Hall, the villainous press, to a large and cheering audience in the Municipal Athletic Stadium. Referring to the villainous press he said the newspapers attacking him were being fed sugar by the Pope. nations of the There are thirty-fiv- e world dominated by the Pope of Rome, and if I have anything to do with it they wont get the United States in on this plan, he cried. Smith has as much chance of carrying New York State as a mouse-colormule has of operating an airplane. He wont carry twelve states in the Union. I have been to eight states and I have not seen a Democrat who thinks he will be elected, and not one who said he would vote for him. ed WHERE TIME IS MONEY 11 G. O. P. ORATORS BUSINESS PROTECTOR. Kansas City Star. A GOOD CAUSE. I BELIEVE that all of America recognizes our national obligation to our veterans. The country today is providing pensions and compensation to 835,292 men and women, with insurance and adjusted compensation to over 4,000,000 more. The total expenditures of the Government in this direction now exceed $576,943,000 annually and represent the one important division of the Government where the policy has been justifiedly to increase rather than to reduce expenditures. This has also been the one important division of the Government where the drive for reduction of expenditures has been applied only for economy in its administration not against veterans. Herbert Hoover. SOME OF the reports are so gossipy as to sound as if irresponsible sections of the campaign were being conducted from the front porch of a summer hotel. Washington Star. American Smelting & Refining Company Salt Lake City, Utah, But nowhere is it more true than in the financial district. Every time the clock ticks, the ticker tape moves, and wherever it moves money is made or lost. Our progressive business man seems to have realized this, and planned his business accordingly. Not more than two blocks from the Stock Exchange there is a moderately sized shoe repairing shop. Located as it is in such an atmosphere of hustle and bustle, it is hardly to be wondered at that the same spirit should pervade his shop. And so, here the business executive, the broker, or the clerk, may have his or her shoes completely repaired both soles and heels within the short space of five minutes.
