Show THE CITIZEN 4 all those who were fairly good managers could make a comfortable living. . Today the average farmer does not know how he is going to raise his tax money and he is kept in continual hot water and quite the high taxes naturally becomes greatly discouraged. Because of rea condition is fast developing where the average person does not lish the idea of owning property and such a condition is very unhealthy for the progress and welfare of any nation. Let us return to the days of common sense in government; let and us separate government from private business as much as church and state are separated; let us bring about the proper living costs the country will right itself. It is just as nonsensical to think that the price of farm products can be standardized as gold, as it would be to try and make iron as valuable as gold. The effort to discourage over production in any therecommodity is criminal and in the end no one reaps any benefit from except the broker who secures a corner on the market. Reports have been sent out from Washington, and by the government, asking that the planting of certain products be lowered in order that better prices can be secured. This is the rankest kind of red propaganda. In the South, the planters even want to erect a monument to the boll weevil because this destructive insect has so reduced crops that the price has been boosted out of all reason. No one but a fanatic can imagine that such conditions can eventually result in any good. Men of Lowdens ideas tried to show the people of the Dakotas how to get rich in a year or two, and the two states nearly became bankrupt because of socialistic ideas in government. Lowden, like Senator Borah, is fast falling by the wayside. Their quest for power is evidently turning their heads from a sane to a radical course. LOOKING FORWARD remarkable man died in this country a short time ago. This He was just a plain everyday Ameriman was not a super-man- . can citizen, with an abiding faith in humanity, and the deepest respect for American democracy and freedom as guaranteed and protected by our Constitutional form of government. He had a broad vision. He built up his business by helping others to build up their business. He knew that if his manufactured articles were to have the greatest sale, consumers had to be able to buy and willing to buy. He could see that in order to sell a pump for irrigation purposes, he had to do a whole lot besides build a pump. It was more necessary at first for him to encourage the teaching of scientific agricultural methods, so that farmers could use pumps and have the money with which to buy, than it was to build a pump factory. And so it was throughout his busines career. He saw the value of building up the buying power of the people as the surest way to build up his own business. He could see that exorbitant taxes, radical legislation and disturbing governmental policies were detrimental to the laboring man and business, and that the laboring man suffered most by any policy which crippled industry and destroyed employment. This man started with nothing but a clear vision and un understanding of basic principles which underlie both individual and national prosperity. When he died he was the head of the greatest business of its kind in the world, and his products were sold in every nation. The question will be asked, What has all this to do with my job or my business? It has everything to do with your business or job, whatever it may be. You have the same brain to think with as the man mentionn ed, although you may not have the insight into human nature which he had. But you can profit by the record which he left. It doesnt take great intelligence, for the shoe merchant to see that he will sell more shoes if conditions are good, nor for the insurance agent to understand that prosperous people are better prospects. Get over the idea that you can make prosperity for yourself A God-give- i alone, and realize that you depend upon the other fellow fori business. The United States is a world leader in many ways. For reason, it should become a land of thinkers. We should not fo the mercy of political agitators and legislative buccaneers. The c try editor should understand that an unsound piece of legislation taxation which interferes with some industry three thousand away, may take an advertisement of a local store out of his paperl create unemployment which will cut down his subscription list Tj local grocer may lose his business, because an unsound tariff p0J destroys thee market for local farm crops. The banker feels thei feet immediately when any business is hurt, and it goes without u ing that the day laborer is the first man to get the ax when Iq ness suffers. The lesson to be learned from this man who has passed on,L plain and simple. He lived his life largely in the interest of j other fellow not from a purely charitable angle, but from 3 standpoint of good business. As more of us follow his exampl many buisness problems and world controversies will disappear, J PRIMARY Cities, counties and states that have adopted the primary J tern of government have nothing to be proud of. When the expend tures necessary to secure a nomination are considered and as nJ as a thousand times more is spent than the office is worth, thes erage question is asked, How will the candidate get back the mone or who reaps the benefit? It is a question that the people would like to have some can date answer who has spent a fortune to be elected. It is estimated that since many states have renounced the r conventions, elections cost from ten to fifty millions, according: whether the elections are held on presidential or off years. If mod is to control elections the time is near at hand when we will be erf fronted with serious results. It may be all right to originate new styles in wearing axi especially for the women, but untried experiments in government-fahave proved a terrible failure and an expensive change toil r taxpayers. . Taxes are becoming so high that the poor cannot dream owning a home, and now office holding is becoming so expensl that a poor man is entirely eliminated and has no chance in the pitl anes. Under the old council form of government, we have five i tinct governments, and as a result our taxes have gone up about times in making the change. We have for years criticised the commission form of govemmt and are surprised that the legislature has nott aken some action correcting the present evil. Now the Commercial Club becks usi and wants to change the commission to a manager form of gor ment. Thus the businessmen of the city admit by their endorse! and actions that they have come to the conclusion that the preform of government is not only too costly but should be changed, is not a government of the people because those elected lit office t responsible to no one and they do about as they please. In former years when the people wanted an improv- ment A petitioned the city council and the matter was passed up n. Toi the people are not asked if they want an improvement. The cr commission goes ahead and announces a big and costly in Drove and if the people do not want it they are forced to go out r. their expense and secure over 50 per cent negative to the impn ement! the the first place one can always find that about 25 per cent f I pie cannot be found, which makes the improvement a dea cinch the commission and the taxpayers foot the bills. The legislature should change this law and return I1 right5 the people. We doubt if there is such a drastic law in lussia how it ever came to be passed here we are unable to c nprchff looking at it from an honest stand point of view. The people should say out loud what they want. In regard to manager form of government, its sup; orters; enthusiasts point to private corporations. As a rule the o ner off f. I con - I : u |
