It is the office of federal prohibition director, which Mathonihah Thomas, now candidate for congress, resigned a few weeks ago. Here was a luscious political plum a sort of brandied fruit which attracted the attention of a number of the veteran party workers. Before they Could get into action, it was announced that Senator King was for Lorenzo Richards, son of County Chairman Richards. Petitions for indorsement began to circulate and as a consequence the witchs cauldron of bitterness suddenly boiled over. . Lorenzo Richards is still in his early twenties and has done little work for the party. His claims are necessarily confined to what 'his father has done by way of backing the King faction. The party veterans argue that here was a chance to reward some of those who had stood loyally by the party and contributed to its finances during many years, and they declared that the position can be administered with success only by one who is worldly wise. Some who sought the office vrere lulled into inaction by the report that - Mathonihah Thomas wanted to hold the position of prohibition director in case of defeat. Now they feel that they were beguiled by the cunning of the Richards followers. But whether their suspicions are correct or not they have been made aware of the fact that Thomas is not to keep the place of prohibition officer. Should he be defeated for congress, as seems fairly certain, he will be named a member of the boundaries commission created by the Versailles treaty, if the latest rumors are well founded. V J Feud Among Gamblers Over Plunder Some of the magnates of the under- world are complaining that they are not making enough out of the gambling graft. Among these is Ike Bernstein, the king of the gamblers. Owing to the publicity given him by The Citizen his operations have been hampered. Even his official friends have not been giving him the leeway he thinks he ought to have for his gambling operations. One or two other gamblers . who thought they were close to the author ities and who have been regular contributors to the protection funds and the campaign funds have not been making as much as they considered themselves entitled to as magnates of the underworld plunderbund. The result is a feud and intense bitterness. The Outs are against the Ins" of the underworld. The Outs have paid their inoney consistently and now they declare that they are not receiving the protection they were promised. They say that a good deal of the spoils that should belong to them is going to rank outsiders who have lately been adopted as .favorites by the sheriffs gang and crooked police officials. The crooked officials are promising that after the election the muddle will be straightened out and that a return will be made to the old basis of dividing the plunder. City Commission Lost In The Smoke Our frightfully expensive city com- mission has established a smoke bud officials and reau with employes to battle with the smoke nuisance along the lines indicated by Mr. Monnett in his $10,000 report. Long has that report been writh us, but not until within the last few weeks has the city commission decided to utilize its information; and follow its recommendations. The Monett smoke report is almost as much a nuisance as the smoke. It is a long, technical document which employs thousands of words to inform Salt Lake that it is suffering from an excess of smoke. Many more pages are required ot impress upon the people that all they have to do is to get rid of the smoke. And finally the costly engineer makes a number of specific recommendations which are far from convincing. To carry out thesef recommendations the city commission has employed five or six employes at a cost of $30,000 a year with Mayor Nes-len- s brother as chief. high-salarie- No doubt the five or six employes will climb to the top of the Walker building tower and continue the official snooping at the smoke screen that embalms our city in the winter. No doubt they will give good advise to those who burn coal, telling them just how coal can be burned so as not to give off much smoke. No doubt they will collect their salaries. And no doubt 'the smoke screen will grow considerably . " denser as the winter curls towards its foggy end. And all of us will have the gratification of kn'owing that the mayor's If party government is good fcnouj for the nation, why is it not gm enough for a city? brother is receiving a comfortable living at the citys expense and that taxes are being swallowed up in smoke. Beyond that, in our opinion, little will be accomplished. True, the present government is pi tisan, but that is far removed frj party government, which involves J direct responsibility of a majority i enables the voters to change parti whenever its representatives are foui inefficient. We do not believe that any of the city commissioners have read the Mo- nett perhaps, Mr. Crabbe. They are lost in the fog and do not know which way to turn. And the civic bodies which have been urging action have little faith in any action taken by the present commission. report except, Democrats Smash At Union Labor . The dismal discords which have: one Democrat against another we hi recorded from time to time by waji In a word, the city is once more experimenting with the smoke evil. Of course, $30,000 a year is little enough if progress is made against the smoke nuisance. In view of the fact that the loss to the city- in population and commercial strength, if the nuis- keeping the public acquainted with minor thrills of the campaign. We wrote a mild obituary last we of the Utah Times, a publication t was able to survive seven weeks Democratic efficiency. T I! - wanun fc ance continues, will amount, in money value alone, to millions of dollars, $30,-00- 0 is an isignificant sum. But when $30,000 is expended by a commission that does. not know what it is doing or whither it is trending, that means the loss of $30,000 directly and hundreds of thousands indirectly. If the commission form, of government is worth anything the Salt Lake experiment has not disclosed it. The vital defect appears to be that the commissioners are responsible to. no one. We believe Which leads us to poge pertinent question for the considet tion of all Salt Lakers: high taxes. Before w it passed away it made it ious attack on the Utah Labor.
