The republic is yet young ; periods of trial and deadly peril will THD O HOMI frequently recur, and only the Americans who live some centuries hence will be able to judge whether the greatest republic in history has fulfilled the hopes of its founders. CRIMES OF A SOBER PEOPLE SEARCHERS Dorthy Dalton after truth are trying to conjecture the causes of wave. Many of our leading cities report an in- crease in most classes of crime. Unfortunately for those who would seek the truth in a coldly scientific fashion the prohibition question has been injected into the controversy and the champions and antagonists of alcohol have somewhat confused the issue. The champions are anxious to prove that the crime increase is in nowise related to prohibition. The antagonists are trying to fix the responsibility on prohibition and to prove that prohibitionists have misrepresented the connection between alcohol and crime. ' Each one of us, in the absence of scientific information, is entitled to a few guesses. It always was difficult for criminalogists to tell just to what extent alcohol was a cause of crime. In point of fact, crime was one of the causes of alcohol. The highest court in England recently decided that drunkenness is no excuse for a crime, but for centuries the English law recognized that inebriety was an extenuating circumstance. A criminal, at any rate, was eager, whenever the circumstances warranted, to place the blame on alcohol to obtain the excuse. Often, too, alcohol could have proved an alibi had the police sifted the evidence more carefully. Crimes that should have been ascribed' to jealousy and domestic infelicities were often laid at the door of the saloon. Men and women worried or maddened by jealousy and the infelicities of love took to drink and. the alcoholic fumes did the rest, but alcohol was made to bear the entire responsibility . The fact is that man, drunk or sober, is inclined to take the path of least resistance. He will not fight his passions though he realizes that they will lead him toward crime. He will not fight laziness though he knows that it will tempt him to steal that he may live. It has been said that conscience makes cowards ;; The vlvueloua and fonclnatlnsf of us all.
