A 10 per cent freight reduction on carloads of wheat, for Instance, will have a direct relation to the wages the railroads can afford to pay. But its relation to the price of a single loaf of bread will be infinitesimal. There are too many other factors that have to be taken into consideration. It is a similar truth which the Na- tional Lumber Manufacturers association is ignoring in its present of propaganda. They advertise that the high price of lumber is due to freight charges. A few cents a thousand feet are chargeable to freight rates. But lumber is not a few cents higher per thousand than trade conditions warrant. It is in many cases several dollars higher per thousand. And this difference is plain everyday profiteering that is more damaging to the building trades than all the union demands put together. The citizens committee that has been organized to clean up the building trades situation cannot officially take cognizance of this situation. It is concerned only with the terms of the Landis awrard, and Judge Landis, though he referred to the conditions in the supply of material as vicious also said flatly that he was helpless to do anything about it. He was right. But the federal government could do something; and apparently till it does, we shall be in the grip of costs that make freight rates cam-pag- n ' Masons of Salt Lake were entertained Wednesday night, with their ladies, by the band and patrol of El Kalah temple, Ancient Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. The entertainment was in the form of a dancing party given in the Odeon and only men who wore the square and compass were admitted. In addition to This was one of a series of dances to be given by the band and patrol of El Kalah temple and the first to which all Masons have been invited. It was estimated that there vrere more than 500 persons in attendance and that the success of the party would call for a similar one, according to those in charge. I. W. Stone is director of the band and C. M. Ball is its president. Other officers are N. Hammill, vice president; C. F. Barrett, secretary; Arthur Griffin, treasurer; C. Billmeyer, li- brarian, and O. Domburg, assistant librarian. Frank W. Morrison is captain of the patrol. C. F. Pinkerton is first lieutenant and T. J. Chamberlain is second lieutenant. L. L. Reynolds is secretary and treasurer. FREIGHT AND PRICES. Freight rates on farm products in carload lots will be reduced 10 per cent at once. It would be interesting to know where this 10 per cent goes to the farmers, the wholesalers, the manufacturers and packers, the retailers, or the consumers. One good guess is that it will all be used up before it gets to the consumers. But the exact facts will be impossible to discover. look picayune.
