Show THE CITIZEN ,8 With the First Nighters THE FOUR HORSEMEN AS VIEWED BY AN EMINENT CRITIC. Comparisons are necessarily odious, but we cannot help looking back over the brief history of the cinema, and trying to find something that can be compared with The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, which comes to the American Sunday, March 5th. The films which first come to mind are Intolerance, The Birth of a Nation, Hearts of the World, and Joan the Woman, but the grandiose posturings of David Ward Griffith and Cecil B. DeMille appear pale and artificial in the light of this new production. Nor does the legitimate stage itself come out entirely unscathed in the test of comparison, for this mere movie easily surpasses the noisy claptrap which passes off as art in the box office of the Belasco theatre. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse will be hailed as a great dramatic achievement; one which deserves more than any other picture play that the war inspired to be handed down to generations yet unborn. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is a living, breathing answer to those who still refuse to .take motion pictures seriously. Its production lifts the silent drama to an artistic plane that it has never touched before. Robert E. Sherwood in Life. plause. Jack Goode and Shep Walde, under the billing, Colored not born that way, are the utmost in colored comicalities. Their songs are good, their dance is good, the patter is good and their portrayal of the negro character e dies and the lyrics that are sung are put to each situation and are admirably accentuated or illustrated in the attractive dancing. The central figure in the play is an East Side Cinderella, who shows herself to be quite as grand as any lady can be when fine clothes are worn in costly surroundings. No more popular tale may be found in literature of the stage or the e Cinbook shelf than this derella. It doesnt make a bit of difference as to the name of the little girl of the ashes if only she can be seen to arise from the cinders and to be as good as the best of them, she is bound to find a sympathetic multitude. self-sam- ;e .tin pb 1 New n the It is only natural thatuneg for the democratic forthl slumbers in every is needed is a little spirit to dominate. njr;. the Cinderella that Ir$tag self in many a romat situation in this playR088 gomery and he and hftWH I making fortunes throng ity into which the pieca,,, only here, but in otk other companies are fjgg L. ? play. ar wa In the big company itablei little Miss Harrold, ntn "f was named after the own 3unda ductJ Great Moments in a Great Pietur is good. IRENE, POPULAR MUSICAL COMEDY, COMING TO PAULINE PSYCHOLOGICAL WONDER, AMAZES CROWDS AT PANTAGES THEATRE . V, Pauline, scientific entertainer and psychological wonder, is the big attraction at the Pantages this week. Its novel features are a great treat for the numerous Pan fans, as it is quite a step from the average run of things vaudevillian to a mystifying and thrilling seance depicting control of mind and matter. How much of Paulines stunts are attributable to hypnotism is a question he alone may answer. How shall we draw the vauge line deliniating where mind control ends and hypnotism begins? Mind control is the result of concentration, according to general belief. Hypnotism represent almost a total lack of mind in the subject and Is due to sugestion from the operator which the subjects accepts because of a paucity of mind, for the time being, according to the seers. Anyhow Pauline makes the red blood disappear from a mans arm making it white, stiff and apparent- ly ossified, without any apparent attempt at hypnotism. Then "Pauline uses the hypnotic art to make two strong men act and cry like babies. Its worth seeing and Is something of a revelation. Irene, the ever popular musical comedy, will return to the Salt Lake theatre for an engagement of three nights and a matinee on Saturday, commencing Thursday, March 9, this time to be presented by what is known as the number one company. The present organization is headed by Patti Harrold, the youthful daughter of Orville Harrold, the grand opera tenor. The little ladys fame rests not alone on the fact that she is her fathers daughter, but because she enacted the name part in Mr. Montgomerys musica play In New York for sixty-fivconsecutive weeks and has been claimed to be the very best of all the Irenes who have appeared in the role. Irene is likely to reappear every season because it is one of those productions that have living qualities, and it isnt any wonder that it is such a hit. Some stage-wispersons might say that the success of this musical comedy is an accident, but when one has seen the piece and has enjoyed the music and the dancing and has laughed at the home thrusts of the fun, there is no other conclusion to be reached than that the purveyors of the production knew they had a good show and were clever enough to put It forward intelligently.
