It is clearly cut in the mind this road we have come over. The years, hours, days, minutes are all there in the memory. A man could keep a diary, recording what happened every minute in his life from his tenth to his fiftieth year, and still he could not by reading it over and back travelling every minute with his logical memory ever arrive at the moods, emotions and ecstacies of his boyhood. Unless the mysteTy of emotion is evoked with the memory he still remains hard and fast in his elder self. A great moral crisis, a vivid juvenile book, sudden shouts of children at play while engaged in some banal work, boys bobsledding down a hill, may violently rend the years and dissolve our mature identity. We are all children (millions repeat this commonplace, but few feel It.) n stories and jingles in The this book, edited by Laura Winning-to- n and illustrated throughout, are drawn from many authors, nearly all American. They concern cows and horses, bandits, magic song birds, apple blossoms, drummer boys and Brownies. They do not try the little mind overmuch, and the tales are all written clearly and directly. Indeed, this would be an excellent book for most of our magazine writers to read over for style and prehision of utterance. At present most of their stories are childish, though they are not for children. i WHAT? It is a tale of the boyhood of Filippo Lippi, who was with his little sister kidnapped by bandits, who released him and gave him a purse after looking at some of his paintings done on boards while a prisoner in their mountain cave. The Brightest Spot Benin is far from a safe place of residence. It is in the heart of the jungle, not far from the Niger River delta. Up to' the time Miss Severoid started for it only one white man had ever entered its walls and returned alive. But she is a young woman of resource, and moreover is not above flirting outrageously with any man who can he made to serve her purpose, including McClure, the capable manager of a trading post, and Clavering, the picturesque but black hearted villain, who appears miraculously in the most remote places, usually clad in immaculate white flannel. There are probably laundries in Benin, although Mr. Simpson permits us to speculate upon that point McClure and Clavering are sworn enemies, the latter with a price upon d his head. Before the story is told they have a desperate fight one night on the beach. Clavering would most certainly he killed if Ilora, the Jackre girl, didnt creep up behind his antagonist and beat him with a hurricane lantern. From that time on McClure was rather the hot end of things, and Miss Severoid coquettes with him on all occasions. in Town Dine, Dance and Enjoy a Qever Show CLEAN, WHOLESOME LIVELY ENTERTAINMENT The Follydols under the direction of Mr.appear (Trover Frankie, daringe dinner, :S0 to , and Jter-theatrsupper, from 10:15 to 12:30, on week nights. Any one likes a girl who is determined in the face of danger; and when Miss Severoid decided to go to Benin City, Africa, for the sake of a man she had reason to believe was being held ther.e against his will nothing on earth could stop her. There are occasionally young women like that, and not infrequently they are good looking.
