Show THE CITIZEN 6 The normal mind strives vainly to form a concept of the mental and moral degradation to which such creatures have sunk. Although it would be folly to indict a whole party for the infamy it is but just to say that officials of the national and state Democratic organizations did not cover themselves with glory in insane. STATE ft MOAOWR candidate. Chairman Mulliner of Utah was even bolder and blinder. This is an eleventh hour attempt to martyrize a candidate in whose record there is nothing to praise, he said, and then he went on insidiously, but who has been carefully kept in the background so far as any claim of achievement, past, present or prospective is concerned. But that was not all. Misguided partisanship, to employ no stronger term , could hardly go farther than this : The state and national chairmen of the Republican party know that this RACE QUESTION had been debated in Ohio. They know that the negroes of the south have been using it among the negro voters in favor of Senator Harding. We do not wish to be uncharitable, but we ask our readers to note some implications which may have been unintentional. We have capitalized the words which seem to indicate a purpose on the part of the chairman to give the impression that the story is true. And he makes the open charge that the Republicans had been spreading the story in the south to influence the negroes. Mr. Mulliner is perfectly aware that in the south not many negroes are permitted to vote and that the story could influence only those who do vote the whites. But we ask the people of Utah who heard the whisperings during the campaign to recall who was spreading the propaganda. The editor of this paper first heard the story about six weeks before the election from one who had been high in the counsels of the Democratic party and who was largely responsible for the nomination of Mr. Welling. He next heard it from a publicity agent of the Democratic state committee. And the publicity agent remarked, very much after the manner of Mr. Mulliner, You notice that they are keeping him in the background, or on his front porch. Other whisperers remarked, You only need to look at his face to see that it is so. It is a detestable and sordid episode in the writing of it. but it is an episode that has become historic. It will appear on many a page of political annals and always it will be referred to with horror and destation. POUNDED IMA !MI1 their statements to the public. Instead of denouncing the terrible propaganda George White, Chairman of the Democratic national committee, accused the Republicans of spreading the story in order to discredit the Democrats. This, in face of the fact that the New York Times had admitted that Professor Chancellor was the principal author of the libel in the present campaign and had denounced him for the act. In a word, White, instead of doing the manly and generous thing, sought to capitalize the false charge by making another false charge. Certainly he placed himself in an almost hideous light by his hint that the story was spread by Republicans in an effort to martyrize their t H 300 SILK AND CLOTH To be offered at prices that establish a new standard in the value-givin- g ready-to-we- business of this city. ar Illllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll Actual $25 to $75 Values Beautiful Beaded Serges New Satins Velours Charmeuse Jerseys Taffetas Tricotines Tricolettes Beaded Duvetyns Georgettes Velveteens Crepe de Chines lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllilllllllllllllllllllll SPECIALLY PRICED IN THREE GROUPS 31aine state SALT LAKE THEATRE Three Dnyx lleKlnniiiK; Tliurwilny, November MATLVEE SAT 11.
