Show THE CENTERVILLE March, 1945 Service News and Notes Et ulhinj We were glad to receive the following letter from Lt. Dale P. Randall : I have received numerous articles and news items from home and have heard news broadcasts from the states, but all of it couldnt thrill me half as much as the Christmas edition of the News-ette. Really, to see the picture of my son on the front page really was a thrill and then beside it the picture of the church house lit up at night made my old heart beat just a little bit faster and what wonderful memories it brought to me of home and loved ones. I want to congratulate you on the wonderful work you have done in publishing the little (I like to call it) moral sheet, because it really does seem to bring a fellow in close contact with the home folks. Sometime in one of the editions, why dont you print an address column of the fellows in the service. Personally, Pd like to know where they are and it seems that Centerville probably never played a bigger part in basketball for Davis High than in 1920 and 21. Davis got into the tourney both years and on the team were the Roberts twins, Dave and Lank. Dave was both times, Lank was one of the top scorers. In 1920 they won all their regular season games. The first night of the tourney they beat Pleasant Lank made 14 points. Grove, Next night Davis took East High, my way. I have had some rare and exciting times at different periods of my tour of operations and a great many of them I dont care to have repeated. At present, however, I breathe much easier as I have completed my tour and am now doing some special work for a while before returning home to my loved ones. I think the ideas set forth in the paper are very good and in some of them I am particularly in- all-sta- te 38-3- 0. 28-2- 3. According to the old, dusty newspaper files, Davis defeated Bingham the final night and romped off with state honors, but not until thriller which finalafter a Otis Adams led the ly ended scoring with 10, Lank took 8, and Sanders, 9. Davis coach in 1920 was Homer Pug Warner, and in 1921 they entered the tourney under a new coach, Woody Romney. Their first game with B.Y.U. High, a tourney favorite, they trailed most of the first half; then put on a rally to win Shorty Leddingham scored 10, Lank 6. Dave insists he doesnt remember we dont see how he could forget being the hero the second night against Box Elder. This game was in exact reversal to the one the night before. Davis led 17-- 2 at halftime before Box Elder made a The sensational rally to tie it noise and suspense were killing as Dave galloped to fame. With only long enough to shoot, he took the ball back near the center of the floor and let fly with the basket which won the game, What happened the final night shouldnt happen to a dog. SPORTS HOT SHOTS MEET SOUTH BOUNTIFUL FOR STAKE TITLE The Centerville Hot Shots and South Bountiful were scheduled to meet Monday night, March 5, for the South Davis stake Senior scout basketball championship, the winner to receive a berth in the Salt Lake divisional tourney March 17. Centerville won first half honors and although South Bountiful had one game remaining at press time they were expected to capture the second half. A recent setback suffered at the hands of South Bountiful made the Hot Shots under-dog- s for the championship tilt. On Valentines day, South gave our flashes their worst This licking of the season, was one of three losses in the second half in which the Hot Shots were definitely off the beam. South Bountiful had the superior shooting team. The score was at the first quarter as Lefty Hatch made two loopers from the side. In the next stanza, Verl Haacke and Clyde Nelson got hot and rolled Vic lead of 12-up a half-tim- e Adams scored the only point in the second quarter. Sessions led a rally in the last few minutes, but South made 13 more points to lead 20-- 7 at the third quarter and win going away. Sessions led the Hot Shots with 7 points. It was only a matter of putting on the pressure for the Hot Shots to beat Centerville Second They were ahead only 2 or 3 points for the first three quarters. In the final canto, however, Clarence Lefty Hatch looped a long one, Snolly Hatch tipped in a rebound, and Phil Sessions came through with a fast set-u- p to push the Hot Shots out of danger. The winner of the stake crown will qualify for a chance to meet March 16 and 17 with the champions of the Pioneer, Riverside, and e Salt Lake stakes in a meet known unofficially as the inter-stakThe winner of this tournament then qualifies for the Salt Lake Council tournament to be held in the Deseret Gym March 22, 23 and 24. February 28, the Hot Shots defeated Orchard although Orchard forfeited the game There is a league rule which says that no team may use a player more than three quarters, thus making at least seven men essential for a team. Orchard had only five men. Phil Sessions led the scoring as usual with 14 points and with this added to the rest of his seasons total, including games, he has rolled up 113 points in all. The Orchard victory gave the Hot Shots 13 wins in 16 games, 25-1- 2, 2-- 0. pre-seas- including a pre-seas- on win over on East Ensign.
