A. Lee of this town, should know whereof she speaks, for she has been around on this old earth Centerville. for 8G years. In her own words, We moved to the very nice town (the best I know) of Centerville on July 19, 1878 . . . Then the town only had 50 families, and we surely pioneered with oxen to plough up the rocks, of which there are 10 wagon loads in the Church in the First Ward, as that was the only ward. They did hold Sunday School in the schoolhouse in the upper end, and oh! the sagebrush! In one respect, human nature has remained the same as regards getting people to work in the various ward organizations, for our informant goes on to say, All families had from eight to ten children, yet our Bishop Randall at that time used to say if he wanted anything done quickly he would go to the busiest mother and she would do it. We get a further glimpse of the community spirit of those days as Mrs. Rockwood continues: Most in town the was a good everyone and one another neighbor helped in times of need. There were no doctors short of Salt Lake City, but we got along fine. I, myself, had eleven children, so that helped build up the ward. We used to sit up with the sick and lay out the dead. We used to take our grain to that old mill up on the hill, and all families dried fruits, made - two charming littledaugh-ter- s via the Newsette. TURN TO PAGE TWO Sunday School Officers and Teachers Outing The Centerville First Ward day School has established a Sun- beach- head second to none. This fine Sunday School under the direction of John L. Price, Claude D. Kirkland, Elliott Randall and Leah Pettit is commendable. These faithful officers staged a delightful outing for officers and teachers at Mueller Park on June 24. After a real baseball game, barbecued spare ribs that were really barbecued were served with all the trimmings and ice cream later. Following the banquet, over two hours was spent in group singing and, with the excellent playing by Claude Kirkland on his guitar, the canyon air was filled with melodi honest-to-goodne- ss ous strains, and many neighbors from adjoining camp fires surrounded the tables and took part in singing the patriotic and old time songs. It was a party long to be remembered in fact, it was after midnight when someone suggested the lateness of the hour. Nearly 40 were present, including the Bishopric and their partners. |
