Show SOLSTICE TIMES FIRE DEPARTMENT NOTES The most hazardous fire season is just ahead of us. The Town Council has passed the usual open burning ban which permits outdoor cooking fires (in metal or masonry facilities) and that’s about it. Our residents continue their record of diligence in preventing fires in the valley. The best fire department there is, is the one that can work with its citizens to minimize fire TOWN COUNCIL NOTES-JUNE 11 TH MEETING calls, than “burn out” because of so many. Even so, I am very concerned about the lack of participation in the fire department by our residents. Grass fires allow a few minutes to get organized and plan an attack. On a structural fire we either have trained people there at the beginning or the building is lost. Sam Wel_ch andI are fire commissioners whose terms expire this year. We have forms for interested candidates for those positions, and it would be great to have several people vying for each of them. I think most of you are aware that I am well past the mandatory retirement age for a fireman in a paid department, and we need to think about a replacement for me as chief. I still feel well physically and mentally, but I see ample evidence among peopleI went to school with that no one lasts forever: You may have noticed that our 3000 gallon water truck is missing from the station. I didn’t like the way the tank sat in relation to the truck chassis. The tank needs to be far , enough forward so that some of it’s weight rests on the front wheels and we didn’t have that. The Grand County road shop has extended the frame for us, and we are getting the drive shaft extended. I’ll feel a lot safer seeing our people drive it after this change is completed, probably before you read this. . I’m going to visit my son, Russell, in Michigan in a week or two.
