Jack Campbell POTENTIAL TRAGEDY AVERTED IN CASTLE VALLEY FIRE A fire began spontaneously about 4: 15 am on the morning of July 7th at a residence on Holyoak Lane. Nearly four cords of fire wood and a small portion of a shed burned in the mishap. The area is very near fields of June (cheat) grass which lead to other residences. Luckily (or intuitively), a neighbor happened to waken soon after the fire ignited. In addition, there was no wind to speak of. In the end, the fire was contained and extinguished by the fi[re department and neighbors. It is thought that a spark from a chain saw (having been used on the wood the previous afternoon) may have smoldered within the pile until igniting, twelve hours later. As dwellersin this highly flammable Valley, it is important for all of us to become more aware of the many different ways fires can start. In the past, spontaneous fires have been started by such things as bottles of water magnified by the sun and stored next to cardboard, and a spark falling from a faulty UP&L transformer. If anyone knows of any other fires started unusually, writing about it would be helpful for us all to know about and guard against. One thing I sometimes worry about this time of year is driving across the June grass. This may be especially pertinent to new residents who have undeveloped driveways and may not be aware of the danger However, even when driving on an established dirt driveway, June grass or other More Fire page 4 |
