Show THE ZEPHYRJANUARY-FEBRUAR- Y PAGE 15 1993 with an idea and sometimes that is the first problem we encounter. Sometimes we can only muster a dazed and bewildered look... 2. At other times, we break down in tears and short out the key board. 3. The copy has been stripped from last month's boards; the blank grid sheets stare intimidatingly at the writer. Somehow, Fulghum, Davcy, Grocne, 1. The Zephyr begins Campbell, Gilmore, Jones, and whoever else wanders in, manage to find cajoling of their editor. inspiration, spurred on by the 4. Ken Davey holds in his hand the little miracle that has made my once shabby existance a study in the Celebration of Life. The floppy disk..thc diskette. Whatever its proper name, the disk and my new computer have revolutionized the production of this paper. Instead of finding a real typist to set all those words, I take the disk, stick it in the slot, hit 7, A:, Shift, F8, 1, 7, 2, 1.75, Enter, Control F8, Enter. Or something like that. Despite Charlie Peterson's best efforts, I have no understanding of how or why a computer works. I just know what buttons to push to give me copy. 5. The ads before they find their way onto a page. 5a. (not shown) I put all the copy and all the ads on all the pages, doodle the cartoons, put the boards in a box and at 6am on the last Tuesday of the month, I drive to Cortez, Colorado, the home of Cortez News. 6. The Crack Team at Cortez News goes to work...Irenc Hauser shoots negatives of each page and checks here for imperfections. 7. Operations Manager Larry Hauser, who looks a lot like Abraham Lincoln, bums the negatives onto a chemically treated aluminum plate. The chemicals always smell great and Larry is always in a good mood. 8. Abe takes the plates (one plate holds the images of 4 pages) and installs them on the press webs. This press has 5 webs, but today we're only using 4. 1 don't know why they call them webs. 9. Larry and his assistant, Randy Bland, start the press. Lany runs up and down the line, adjusting the ink and the water flow...no, I don't understand good-natur- light-sensiti- ed ve about the water either. 10. By way of some kind of a miracle, the pages come together at the end of the press, where they're cut and folded and roll out on a conveyor belt. 11. Larry keeps making adjustments; about the time he gets it right, it's time to shut down the press. 12. As the Zephyrs roll off the press, someone bundles them and throws them at me. I don't know who this woman is... vehicle. 13. 1 load the Zephyrs into my new yuppie-scum 14. Always prompt is Christie with the bill. 15. This nightmare is almost over. 15a. (not shown) I drive back to Moab, argue with the new postmaster, and distribute the Zephyrs myself, now that Gilmore has deserted. Later I put the subscriptions in the mail. 15b. My friends tell me about all the typos I missed. 15c. I leave town. |
