Show y r THE ZEPHYRJULY 1992 some of them for later is apt to be more than a little unpopular. And yet this is exactly the individual we need to have making decisions for us. Do we want people in office who are trying to be popular and liked by their friends, or do want we people who are willing to make the hard and unpleasant decisions we need? And will "we the people give our respect to someone who is willing to make sound but unpopular decisions, who is willing to say "no" to us when that is necessary? This lack of courage is what has given us our national debt fiasco, which is strangling our nations future and selling our children into slavery. How much easier it was for Pres. Bush and Reagan to say "yes" to giving trillions of dollars to their cronies in the military industry, than to spend mare of the money that we actually had back then, on education and and our children's future. Our county commissioners find it easy to say "yes" to the oil companies, equestrian centers, and boondoggle roads over the Bookdiffs, but in two full years of attending countv commission meetings, I never once heard our commissioners support our schools or the children of the county. They've spent hundreds of hours discussing how to build any number of different roads, and other construction projects, but the only discussion concerning schools was whether or not to take even more of the PILT monies from the schools to give to other special service districts. Why don't the people with children speak up as strongly about their kids' educations as the and other toys? Do we want commissioners who will pass out jobs and positions only to their relatives and cronies, or do we want commissioners who can recognize that there are many different groups in the county? Governing is more than just bringing home the biggest bag of cookies for your friends. And since there are many people coming to Grand County who do not live here, some of the dedsions should be made for them as well. We who live here are beneficiaries of the immense amount of public land we have around us. More of our political decisions need to consider the interest of both the present and future visitors with whom we will have to share these public lands. Acknowleging that other folks from the rest of the country and the rest of the world also have rights to the public lands around us is a highly unpopular notion in Grand County. (If we don't want to share our good fortune with so many others, one easy option is to stop advertising ourselves via the Travel Council and Rim Commission.) Even the idea that we might leave some of this public land unspoiled for our children is too visionary for our current county commissioners, who are working as hard as they can to spread as much economic development blight as possible throughout the public lands before they are unelected. They will leave an uglier, weaker, and more impoverished county to their children. jA'.; AS THE PENDULUM SWINGS V: Excellent opportunity for the right person. A profitable 8 unit bed and breakfast. Main ' :j , , to have an election for all the county commissioners next month, all would probably be voted out. In the case of Dave Knutson, I think As unpopular as this is to my friends, after watching Dave on the two years, I think he is an appropriate commissioner who has his represented constituancy almost too welL If we could just find a couple more strong persons balance Dave's to ideological position and more closely reflect the divergent views in the county, we could end up with a stronger and more beneficial commission. Few of us have any use what-sever for our other chie-les- s commissioners, and hope they're replaced by more as soon as possible. candidates and honest competent intelectually Again, the controversy surrounding Dave comes from the failure of the other groups in Grand County to get representation on the commission, more than that Dave is such a bad commissioner. Sure he's made some conspicuous and amusing blunders (as any of the rest of us would have done if we were in his seat on the Commission and didn't have anyone else on the Commission to help us avoid our own mistakes). Hopefully the petition to expand the size of the county commission will succeed at the voting booth, will give some of the other groups in Grand County a voice on the Commission, and will correct this problem.
