Show PAGE 8 THE ZEPHYR AUGUST 89 recent experiences In the wilderness are varied. In the past couple of years, I have visited some of the areas that are In the most need of protection. East L A. has to be the most Impressive of the bunch; however, between my first and last visits, I have noted some definite Impacts due to the Increase In visitation. The wonderful Spanish plctographs In the area are being vandalized and overwritten In English to accommodate all the Yuppie visitors. The colorful wall art Is being white washed by thoughtless Individuals. The endangered species list Is In an upward spiral that should be of grave concern to all. Most Impacted have been the friendly fauna. The first time I visited the area I observed flocks on almost every corner. A rash of them, to be sure. Now they are being lost to developers In blue uniforms and disease. No longer are the piquant females of the species fluttering out to meet with gawking motorists stopping In their vicinity, Just like the bears My In Yellowstone. There are even organized groups going Into the area and harassing the common pharmaceutical apportloner and the Gangus Latlnus, forcing them out of their natural habitat. It was without question, much more dangerous to be In such an area prior to the groups getting a foot hold. But, contact between wildlife has always presented such problems. This .roads Issue Is another major battle line between the environmental and groups. The environmentalists want the area left undisturbed, even to the point of closing existing roads and the only choice for entry would be to pack In. The developers on the other hand are proposing more roads and access for further development The schism these Issues has created, has torn the people of Los Angeles County apart There has been meeting upon meeting and no pro-develop- pro-develop- ment ment pro-develop- ment . Jack-In-The-- Box consensus can be reached. Closer to home we have seen the complete degradation of the Salt Lake City, 200 South wilderness area. It has been completely developed and the wildlife habitat almost totally destroyed.. This has caused serious Impact In that city. We have seen It on T.V., the fauna was forced Into nearby, developed residential areas, much to the concern of Its residents. The concern over contact Some of the between wildlife children Is not unwarranted. In the developed wildlife has hung on and still tries to survive areas, causing much undesirable contact with visitors In that areas. The developers continue to remove the domicile of the unprotected and throwing them Into the street, ever Increasing that Salt Lake Is attempting to alleviate the undesirable contact situation with the construction of habitat shelters for the homeless wildlife, but to little avail. There are not immediate solutions to all of these problems, and unless all the factions can come together and work out some V compromises, nothing will be accomplished. I certainly feel fortunate to live In civilization, here In Moab, where I have minimal contact with wildlife, and when I choose to do so, I can get completely away from it by taking a short hike up a canyon near home. 1 RED SANDS AUTO BODY 1209 So.
