The buffalo grass is thriving and the diffrosc, rabbitbrush, Ash, hackberry, redbud, and golden currant and Apache plume are locust trees, all resistant to drought, will someday provide a canopy of shade for visitors, and evening primrose, penstemen, globcmallow, and chocolate flower will add more color and life. Critics may grumble, So what?" Is this just another politically correct costly exercise with little or no real benefit? Consider these facts: well-establishe- d. America's single largest "crop" is not com or wheat or soy beans...it's lawn grass. We use more fertilizer on our lawns than India uses to grow food. Americans spent $15 billion on lawn care last year; annual expenditures for the entire lawn industry exceeded $18 billion. Over 70 million pounds of pesticides were used on U.S. lawns alone last year. That amount is increasing at a rate of 8 a year. At least one local tour operator will have to previously planned trips while the company is filming. And it raises the question: how far is this community willing to bend (over) to accommodate Hollywood? For years locals and tourists alike have been delayed temporarily along the river road and at Arches National Park while filming proceeded on everything from Steven Spielberg movies to German cigarette commercials. But the delays have always been kept to a minimum. Five days is a long time to wait for the director to yell, "Cut. Print." re-rou- STAY COOL CALL ME.
