Show PAGE 3 THE ZEPHYRDECEMBER 1992 According to the story, he said it with a grin, perhaps because he was aWe to stay employed at the citizens' expense. The community could do little but shake its head and speak even more cynically about an unresponsive government We could have flooded the commission chambers with a couple hundred citizens demanding that the commission abolish the road board, we could have displayed the same outrage that we wore on our sleeves the previous autumn. The commission was even controlled by a Democratic majorit- y- the same commissioners who had thrown die rascals out in November. But nothing happened. No one had the stomach for another fight, and Jimmy Walker outlasted his opponents. That's why he's still grinning, four years later. election. This is an opportunity This time the stakes are even higher. This is not a to out to put backroom politics, and pasture once and far alL This is not politicians a vote, based on ideology. Jimmy Walker can tell us until he's blue in the face (and believe me, he's getting there) that extremist environmentalists are manipulating a gullible public in order to gain power. His rhetoric is a little erratic.sametimes it sounds like he believes that all 1822 at other times, he suggests that the citizens who voted for the change are dangerous s force the community to do its evil of can so general public is stupid that a handful bidding. Either way, it is an insult to the citizens of Grand County, who know better and deserve better. I am looking forward to a strong and long list of candidates when the filing period begins on December 7. There are countless numbers of good people in Grand County, who have never considered themselves politicians, but who care about and love our community. I'd love to see D.L Taylor throw his hat in the ring. Maybe D.L and I wouldn't agree on every issue, but no one can question his honesty, integrity, and his sense of faimess...that's what I'm looking for in a candidate. There are so many more; just off the top of my head, how about John Maynard? Bill Hedden? Charlie Peterson? Marde Till? Tom Stengle? jane Janes? John Hartley? Peggie Nissen? John West? Paul Menard? Lance Christie? Venice Denney? Bobbie Dominick? Bill Meador? Terry Khouff? Jane ? Andrew Riley? Maris Allen? James Gordon? Diane Pouts? This list is ridiculously incomplete...Davey has a list of his own on page 8, and neither of us has scratched the surface. The point is, you don't have to be a politician to run for office; in fact, lacking that distinction, in these days and times, may be your strongest asset But whether you choose to become a candidate or not, it is essential that you choose to participate as a citizen and as a voter. We've fought so hard to get this far. ..PLEASE don't let complacency be our undoing. 50 259-407- 0 South Main or 259-5733 Jewelry Pottery Rugs Gifts one-issu- e self-servi-ng eco-freak- s; eco-freak- DiBon-Smyth- COUPON Bring In this ad for 15 off your total purchase, (one coupon per visit) subscribers, and to anyone else who wants to remember the numbers, here are the results of the vote in Grand County: Grand County Commission President of. the U.S. Peter Bill Clinton 1,158 , . ; Haney 1,613 Rick Hover 1,050 George Bush 1,096 Sam Cunningham 633 Ross Perot . 987 U.S. Senate Change of Government Initiative For Bob Bennett 1,796 , 1,822 For out-of-to- . . 1410 U& House of Representatives Against 1482 County Attorney Bill Orton Bill Benge 2,167 Richard Harrington 878 . And Peace. , So the election was over, everyone was exhausted, and concerns were already growing in my mind that apathy would conquer the hearts and souls of foe weary electorate before we got around to the next set of elections. And then I remembered that the citizens would be put to the test much sooner than that. The BLM had a public hearing scheduled for November 17 to hear comments on the proposed Book Cliffs Highway. Would anybody show up? I was worried. That afternoon, I wondered if I'd have to stand up and say something. I don't like to speak in public.. mo, that's not accurate: I dread it, I loathe it But what if proponents of the road packed the civic center with boosters? What if the opposition stayed home? I've never been prouder to be a citizen of Moab than I was that evening. My worries were unfounded. Almost 200 people arrived that night to speak out on the road. They were from all age groups, from all walks of life. There were hunters and ranchers, government workers and remnant hippies, people in the oil and gas industry, senior citizens and speakers who could almost pass for teenagers. And almost all of them came to speak against the highway. I felt like I was in the middle of a Frank Capra movie. Here are some of foe quotes: "I guess some would say I must be one of those obstructionist environmentalists, and yet I never considered myself ane...but I can't support this because I think it is another one of Grand ' County's boondoggles." Nadine Condie liberal school up north called BYU. And I'm against this road." T went to that long-haire- d Wayne Ruth . "This road would not be to the benefit of Grand County...The mining companies will put roads in where they need them. They don't need this road built by the county." Merv Lawton Only three local residents of Grand County, David Knutson, Ray Tibbetts, and Ron Steele, all commissioners, expressed support far foe project Knutson, looking weary and Tm concerned with the direction that Grand County is taking. There is a penalty said, resigned, for shortsightedness. I hope we don't inflict that penalty upon ourselves. But I fear that's where we're headed." Proponents of the road introduced a new strategy at the meeting and in comments made since What could be more reasonable then. Now they're saying that all they want is foe than that, they suggest? And they fen bade on the same lame argument that to oppose the indicates dearly that opponents are showing their true colors. ..you know, obstructionist etc. etc; for the road Nice try, guys. But the reality is this. The approval by the BLM of a is the only thing that stands between foe Road Board and the approval of a $3 million loan ' (that's LOAN in capital bold letters) from the Community Impact Board. y, then they get the , Plain and simple, it's a trap. If Jimmie and foe boys get the of as out run when and the start money they they surely will highway, money, they building be then them 83 million won't more, (because demanding they'll arguing that it very far), get would be foolish to abandon a road that's only partially completed . : At a road board meeting on the Saturday after the hearing, it was obvious that its members were not impressed with the turnout or the comments. They think they know what's best for us, we, the stupid dtizens of Grand County. They, the informed few, will do what's best for the masses, because they think we're incapable of taking care of ourselves... Well see.
