Show 5 ' PAGE 17 THE ZEPHYR JAN FEB 1992 C After Steen hit the rush was on, with prospectors scouring the canyons looking for the one big strike. Some hit, and most didn't But meanwhile, further to the north, sharp operators in the sleepy city by the lake realized they could strike it rich as well, by forming uranium corporations, holding companies and consortiums. Some of the operators actually had some knowledge of uranium. But they were rarities. Nonetheless, there were enough success stories, doctors and accountants and executives buying penny stocks and making 40, 50, 100 times their original investments, to turn a town based on hard work and family values Into a gambling capital. And that tradition continues today, with more pyramid schemes per capita than anywhere else In the nation. Steen was also famous for throwing great parties, with hundreds of guests at his home on the hill. It's only right that now we throw a big party for him decades later. Steen Is also known for something else. During the 1950s, he would drive out to the Moab airport every afternoon. He would climb Into his plane and begin climbing, circling, circling, circling, until he was high enough to pick up Salt Lake City television stations. Then he would turn on a portable tv and his kids would watch the Mickey Mouse Show. A guy like that deserves to be honored. the Grand County budget hearing, commissioners were asked about a couple of road projects they have planned. One Is the Hastings road, near Green River. The other Is the Willow Basin road. Both projects have their supporters who are near and dear to the hearts of the county commissioners. And both projects will definitely be discussed in depth over the next few months. Then there's the small Grand County town of Thompson. The railroad tracks separate the north and south ends of town. There Is a railroad crossing with freight sidings used by the At - Denver and Rio Grande. Often, trains will pull into the siding to wait for other trains or to switch cars. While that is going on, often for an hour or more at a shot, nobody can get across town. School buses sit and waft. The 25 or so residents living on the wrong side of the tracks worry what would happen In an emergency. There Is another railroad crossing, about a mile or so to the west The problem Is, the road connecting the two crossings has been closed by the state. So for years, Thompson residents have asked the county to fix the road, or build another one across private land where the owner has offered to give his permission. For years candidates for county commissioner go to Thompson to hustle votes and for years they promise to fix the problem. And for years, after they are elected, they forget all about It Most of the people In Thompson arent as wealthy and influential as those pushing for the Hastings and Willow Basin roads. And' maybe that's enough reason alone to listen to them. : : V t A ' A A fa y ; w ' ,;Avj .. , . ! w HOUSING STATUS: Are you renting or buying?
