Its demise can ultimately lead to changes In climate, Including drought which causes famine, hunger, malnutrition, disease and the death of children. Its all connected WE are all connected. We cannot Ignore the Big Picture. Give me some common ground to stand on Joe, and lets go from there. J.S. Dear Jim: I am disgusted. I read brilliant letters in your paper championing wilderness areas and other environmentalist schemes. On television and radio and In publications I see and hear articulate discourses from extremely gifted and Intelligent people degrading cowboys, production, development and progress. Poetry, articles, books, films, and T.V. shows flow endlessly from truly Inspired people against humans In the name of the environment. Mega millions of dollars and prime time television show us how the environmental heroes save Iced In and stranded whales. The words to describe the Alaskan oil spill are Inspired and powerful. The magnificent prose used to dupe the world Into the Idea that "Wilderness Areas" are "multiple use are positively inspiring. You can even dial a telephone number which Is advertised nationally and $10 of your money will automatically be sent to Illustrious environmental organizations but you should remember that while your money is being used; To degrade cowboys; free iced in and stranded whales; To frighten people about possible cancer causing insecticides; To create Wilderness Areas (which will destroy the wilderness characteristics of those areas); To hire cops to police those Wilderness Areas; To fight development and progress and raise your taxes; To stop new technology such as nuclear which is a necessary step which will lead to the truly clean and low cost energy which Is safe; To hurt humans while the recipients of your money get rich and famous; Forty thousand human babies starve to death each day. All of these brilliant articulate, Intelligent, and truly decent people who call themselves environmentalists are blind to the fate of 40,000 human children who starve to death each day. Every time these saviours of the whales and the humpbacked suckers breathe for two minutes, three human children die of malnutrition. Why dont these gifted people who call them environmentalists resolve that problem as they go about badmouthing humans and causing the rest of us problems and more fear. Dear Editor: the English program at Grand County High School Is "solid, as principal residents should congratulate the educational system on its success; our high school graduates are literate. Goldwyn Philadelphia, Pa Editors Note: Besides agreeing with Joe on the numerous "brilliant letters But I'm not that have appeared in this paper, many of his points are well-taksure his perspective Is any less narrow than those he criticizes. Malnutrition, disease, and premature death are heartbreaking realities that are being tackled by many of this planet's great minds. In the Age of Specialization, its doubtful these "extremely gifted people can deal with all the Earths problems with equal skill. But Joe seems to be taking an "eitheror approach. Either we save the whales or we save the children. Either we worry about carcinogens in insecticides or we stop malnutrition. Either we stop the suffering of animals, or we stop the suffering of humans. My question is: why do we have to choose? How can we choose? The fate of the Gulf of Alaska and the fate of the Ethiopian children are inextricably linked together by the small blue planet they share. There can be no better example of en. P. S.
