Show PAGE 16 THE ZEPHYRMARCH 1993 PAGE 17 THE ZEPHYRMARCH 1993 Election night Always the jitters with a crowd-plcase- r, heart-warmi- ng Dick Rose cases the group's election night medley of Rodgers & Hammerstein songs. . It's a tradition in Grand County for its political junkies to show up at the court house to watch the election results come in. With the court house under construction, the group gathered at the temporaiy court house facility behind old City Market. The gathering was as notable for who wasn't there as who was. Missing were such familiar figures as David Knutson, Roberta Knutson, Jimmie Walker, and Manuel Torres. It marked the end of an era, and the beginning of a new one. 1st District winner, Charlie Peterson, 2nd District winner Ken Ballantyne, and the only Council member nicknamed Bubba, beams proudly but humbly. the "Anecdotal Man" compares this night to a trip he took to the grocery in the Spring of 1957. Mayor Tom Stocks, always full of surprises, stuns the crowd by actually being quiet...we wonder why. Ken Davey, "the Dean of Moab's Press Corps" reports the first returns to Moab's voters. The picture of humility, 4th District winner Bill Heddon accepts victoiy, while Ken Davey manages to get his nose in yet another picture. "One vote? I won by one lousy vote?" (A recount later indicated John Maynard's margin of victory was much broader...7.) |
