Show PAGE 7 THE ZEPHYR AUGUST 89 economic Impact and the progress an agency Is making toward Its goals Is "patting ones self on the back, then tor goodness sake, let's have more back-patti-ng. The film Industry Is kept aBve by the Moab Him Commission (MFC) and Includes a good deal more than movle-makln- g. Television, commercials, documentaries, Industrial films and print ad campaigns are all a part of the business business being sought by hundreds of other film commissions who are backed by states and communities recognizing the economic potential film productlona offer. MFC has developed and maintains catalogues of local talent and resources, which help assure the film executives that their needs can be met In what Is considered by the film Industry to be a remote area. When locals are contacted by film companies for use of property, goods or services, citizens can contact MFC for counsel on the best way to proceed. For example, a "deal slip Is helpful to make certain that both parties understand how much will be paid, for what length of time and under what circumstances. MFC also stands by to assist If the "deal Is not complied with, by either the company or the local party Involved. While MFC does not participate In what fees are negotiated between the company and locals, MFC has established a wage guideline for average fees that might be helpful to locals who are new In the business. The guideline Is a must for companies working up their budget projections and Is based on a combination of focal wage rates and Industry averages. Since It Is more costly for per diem and travel to southeastern Utah than to metropolitan areas, It Is necessary to keep costs for goods and service In Hne or the companies will go where the economic climate Is more reasonable. It Is Important when folks have problems with film companies that they let the film commission know at once. MFC serves as a buffer and troubleshooter between the film company and the community, making every effort to assure fairness to both parties. MFC cannot help to right a wrong If Its members are not made aware of the circumstances. Problems left unsolved tend to fester, which can plague the efforts of a lot of hardworking people. What problems do arise are a challenge and the Moab Rim Commission enjoys Its work. To assure that future generations become aware of the non-uni- exciting Hollywood history, MFC Is preparing a book on the movies filmed In Moab and Monument Valley. The publication Is planned for release this year In honor of the 40th anniversary of the Moab Him Commission. areas MFC Board of Directors President Larry Campbell Jim Kelly Treasurer Don Holyoak Jim Mattingly .
