A. Hendrickson Replies To The Republican Committee S 11 Regarding Smithfield Junior High School M B Says Amos and Andy Should Take Lesson m I- B Had Amos and Andy been honoi .ih the privilege of reading the article from the Republican Committee relative to Mr. Hendrickson's connection with the completion of the Sm Junior High School, Amos would undoubted'y have cal'ed, Ough, Ough! That's the kind of stuff we deal in. My readers will agree it takes much less space to accuse a trust man than for the man to bring out his defense, hence my reader will follow these lines carefully, that you may know the facts and not be disturbed Over the political bluf' hat ocIt certainly is evident that Herald. curred in Thursday' the above Campaign Comruttee is hard up for something ,j say against the Independent Candidate for the State Senate es They spend a ha!" page of The Herald on tne ten occurmg in the Sruthf'eld Sentinal regarding my interest and efforts in behalf of the Junior High of which as chairman v.' the Taxpayers Association, I took an active interest in having that splendid building completed 4 I i sm M S B S NOW TO The C3che County School Board FACTS had contracted for the new school building at a cost of 339 uO1' and found they were short $20,000 in completing the structuie The School Board could borrow no money and the only way they could secure the necessary means was by the consent cr the County Commissioners in allowing an increase in the levy of .8 of a mill. To make this additional levy, it was nee;-- , sary to obtain the consent of the Commissioners, and as .hey realized this was an off year and the County taxes were already too high, they had twice refused the School Beard the privilege of increasing the levy THE few days later, the late Superintendent Larsen sent cr me and asked me as chairman of the Taxpayers Association, intercede with the Commissioners stating at the same vime that it would cost the taxpayers between three and four thou sand dollars additional money if the building was left to be completed m 1931. A m m E m m did call on the Commicsionei s and present the matter to them, but they again relused to grant the School Board's request, giving what thought, a good and justifiable reason It seems now quite evident, that the build'ng would have to remain unfinished. I to run their school through the year, and also set aside $20,000 for new high schoo's, as they deemed it necessary to build in different parts of t1 e County. It was intended to havf such an additional levy in for 1931 toward a new high echool to be erected in Wa'sville. This $20,000 of course, would only be a ..uc'eus toward i.en a proposed building. As Chairman of the Taxpayers Association, it was of course, Mr. Hendrickson's business to work with the Commissioner endeavoring at all times to keep taxes as low as possible, consistent with the wisdom of the occasions, and as a result I made no complaint at the actions of the Commissioners. r-- 'A n ral'ed on the Superintendent this last time, I asked t it nil the School Board be called together and that the hi ,n snool contractor and architect be also present, as had a pr m coition to offer to them which might perchance enah then to complete their building As I recall! the were s well as leading citizens from Smithfield, among presen them T E T irr the banker. At this meeting, it was clearly shown h y the tect and builder, that there would be a loss , c' $3500 of t taxpayers money if the building was irrl accordingly I proposed 'he following: Thjt the Scl oo! Bca-- d concent to the exclusion in 1931 on their budget, 000 it was proposed to collect from the Taxpayers of the toward the Wellsville High School, as well as the elimination of course, from the budget of next year the $20,000 they were rove wanting to add to their budget to complete the budding, wh ch would make a difference of $40,000 in the 1931 stated to the meeting that this was the only condi tax, and ton or which v.ouid again ask the Commissioners to consent to the increasing levy cf $20,000 to complete the Junior High .bis year. ' I uncom-ple'ed- I I 'ter cons de ab'c discussion pro and con, the Board with their fnenas oresent, consented to this arrangement realizirg it would be their gam and no loss to the taxpayers, but would enable them to complete their building for this season's use. A Accordingly, arranged the meeting with the School Board members and thir visiting friends and the County CommisIt was held in the court room where the matter was sioners discussed for one and one half hours. I I $ ' i lu m "t rK a The following day, I called on the Superintendent with o proposition which is about as follows: the School Board had included in their yearly levies in years gone by, sufficient funds L.aun'1-- luii I tl cite A 07 la me r here state to the good credit of the late Superin-ter- , Larsen, that he in this meeting consented to the reduction of $500 on his yearly salary, if this was neces-s-,- i in o der to the consent of the Commissioners to 'lie completion of th, Juno- - High in which he was so greatly interested and anxious for its completion. V ISrTSCZMZXEKClEZXZZXXIlItBlIXIIXEIIIIXZlIIPIZI terest and concern IZ2KBZXZX1 above line were ihgyvn to Before It was printed, n October 22nd at 1:45 p. m. Commissioner W. W. Hall, an store, and he approved it and at the corner of the J. C. authorized it. It is possible that he might not have known I intended to publish it In the r.iithfield paper, and a little later in the day it was shown to C. F. Olson, Vice President of the School Board, and the followlrg day to President Albert McCann of the School Board, both of whom thought the statement was correct and could see nothing wrong in it. I took the matter up from the Commissioners viewpoint and alto from the School Boards view point, and tried to make it clear that it was not an injustice to the taxpayers to grant this additional $20,000 but that it was really a saving to them of $3,500 of their money and to the school interest a great advantage inasmuch as the building was greatly needed for this fall's use I also stated that in the event the Commissioners granted this request, it would be "f course, a gentleman's agree would like to have it put in writing between ment, but that the School Board and the Commissioners. I The meeting adjourned. The Commissioners left for their left for my office, and the School Board to their office, and In office about one half hour, the Commissioners sent for me, to to and might say my surprise they had consented grant the School Board s request and the gentleman's agreement was prepared and handed to me, at the same time asking me If It was soon signed up thought that would cover the ground by both sides and thus ended the matter, and the School Board was permitted to increase their levy sufficient to raise the additional $20,000 needed to complete the school building I I I Let me here state that the County Commissioners thanked me kindly for my intercession in the matter. The President of the School Board Mr. Albert McCann, Vice President C F. Olson .and ai! others then present also assured me of their appre ciation and that they knew that rry efforts had resulted bringing the School Board and Commissioners together as had been done. ' When the building was dedicated, vitation to attend the services. I received a special gona over the Republican Now, Mr. Reader, if you Hav article of Thursday won't you conclude, it was much ado about nothing' Tftee has been no glory taken from the Commissioners nor from the School Board, the architect or the builder, it merely states that as chairman of the Taxpayers Association' Mr Hendrickson did his simple duty irr endeavorIn the Smithfield High School. ing to complete a worthy start Is it not an example of Gaping at a gnat and swallowing a camel Let me quote rgam, the words of a great American writer when he says: The means one uses to injure another's character, become suicidal of his own The Republican article tries to say that I am a strenuous seeker I never collected a dollar of public money yet 'rom a City, County, State or the Nation, for services rendered. The reason I am on this ticket now is through the urgent request of our worthy Mayor end 113 written requests, and am sure a hundred verbal requests to accept tne nomination on the Independent Ticket. office I in NOW THE SMITHFIELD SENTINEL. Here is what apIt may be interesting to peared in the Smithfield Sent nl the good people of Smithfield to know that Mr Hendrickson, as chairman of the County Taxpayers Association, made special efforts to have the Sm thfield High School completed this year It is extremely doubtful the building would have been completed this season, had it not been for the interest and efforts put forth by Mr. Hendrickson i ember The above sentences ars not vsry strenuous, ought not to bs very harmful, at least not to appreciative friende. There was only one In Smithfield I understand, that took offense and that was Mr. T. B. Farr, a banker, and when I say Banker, possibly I need say no mors, for he Is the one who stirred up all the fuss. In the above meeting, the Commissioners presented their negative side in representing the taxpayers, while the Superintendent and others of the School Board presented their side of the controversy, and the whole affair was one 0 deep in- Now, if I can render service to the people of my County, and they so manifest their wishes at the polls, I shall do so to the best of my ability, and their interest shall be my interest, while if they fail to manifest such wishes, I shall be i'Jst as happy without the position, and I know that in this coming winter's legislature, there must be strenuous work done In behalf of the small taxpayer and the common people, as it will be a battle between the multitude and the rich tax dodgers.
