Some 36 years later, Dee can still be seen hitching either his horses tflfo in the early part of the century, moved with them to Elwood, and in 1945 managed to get his own ranch in Deweyville. When everyone was trading their teams for their first tractor, Dee was sending horses and mules across the country by the railroad carload. To this day, having never driven a tractor, Dee says he would rather save a gallon of gas here and there and hitch up a convenient team. THE FIRST Shires in North America were brought to Ontario, Canada, from London in 1836 and to Massachusetts in 1844. Dee has one Belgian stud by the name of Duke. This draft 1,900 pound horse sets the pace on the ranch with his unmistakable place of authority. The breed is a native of Belgium and was first brought into the U.S. in the 1880s. Dee also has an interest in Perissodactyla Equidge. His interest dates as far back as his memory. In short, he loves mules, and two in Molly and particular: DEE HAS found the time, in between his busy cattle ranching chores, to maintain a rare herd of large and powerful draft horses and mules. Only five breeds of draft horses are found commonly in the U.S.: the Belgian, ..Clydesdale, Percheron, the Shire and the Suffolk. From its donkey father, the mule inherits long ears, short hair, a tufted tail and slender legs and hoofs. The mule also has the donkeys breying voice and stubborn disposition. The horse contribution is the large body, broad chest and strong muscles. Molly and Myrt are average size mules weighing 1,400 pounds and standing 17 hands at the shoulder. The most valuable qualities of the mule are its sturdiness and endurance. of a the mu wiles Mules can perform difficult work under unfavorable conditions and can exist with little care and poor food. BREEDING WORK horse teams is a rare art in a mechanized society, Dee claims. The offspring of his herd are destined for sheepmen and some cattlemen who steadfastly rely on them to pull camps and pack supplies in ranch country. They will also be sold for a much more novel purpose: Some people will use them strictly for show, such as parades, horse shows, stock shows and fairs. Dee claims that because of the energy crisis he will be turning to the team more and more on his ranch. He plans to harrow this spring using his ancient non-ga- s burning, d and nearly forgotten source of energy. g, out-date- VINTAGE equipment such as wagons and harnesses is a real problem in these modern times, he says. Most pieces that are found are rotted away and finding a skilled craftsman trained in the vanishing trade is difficult. Many items must be completely rebuilt from scratch. The team driving fan belongs to a small dedicated group of individualists. They meet and exchange ideas and information at such places and events as the national at Don-nePass, Nevada, each er year. Here teams, team owners, and team lovers gather to retrace the exact route that their forefathers traversed in winning the West.
