He earned a bachelors degree from Utah State University in 1965 and a doctorate in history from Washington State University in 1968. He has taught at the University of Texas at Arlington as well as at USU, where he is associate professor of his Clark, white settlement starting with the Mormons settling the town of Franklin, and miners moving into the Orofino and Lewiston area.
