Several of the real values of Sainfoin are: 1. It has never been known to bloat an animal at any growth height. 2. It controls bloat in feed lots when fed with alfalfa hay. 3. Sainfoin grows any place alfalfa will grow. 4. It grows very early in tne spring ana continues to grow late in the fall. Where snow depth is not a problem winter pasture can be grazed. Green foliage has been found in November, December, and January and it is not known just when it freezes. Mr. Anderson, who does an excellent job of pasturing alfalfa and alfalfa-gras- s hay, has not lost an animal to bloat in the past two years. How ever, he will change an electric fence three times a day, rcgrowth after being cut for hay or pastured off. Several trial pasture irrigated seedings have been planted in the Franklin Soil Conservation District this fall. Von Atkinson of Treasureton has had a trial seeding under dryland conditions since 1965. Yields are similar to alfalfa. Anyone interested in a pasture planting of Sainfoin may contact the local Soil Conservation Service office on South State.
