The United Kingdom is withdrawing all military forces east of Suez Britain got rich by exploit ing the world and then went broke trying to police it. Prime Minister Harold announced with "pro found regret" that Britain is forced to abandon her long g function time in such places as Bahrein, Singapore and Malaysia. The Malaysian prime minister said, "We must immed iately prepare to guarantee the safety of our nation." With the British crutch re moved they will stand alone Mr. peace-keepin- unless somebody goes running over there with another crutch. If we do, we are inexcusably stupid. If we can read and reread history and fail to learn anything from it, then perhaps we deserve to follow Rome, Spain, Greece and China which capsized and went down when their reach exceeded their grasp. It is entirely likely that those fiercely nationalistic nations do not want American intrusion any more than they want British or Soviet or Red Chinese intrusion. They may tolerate our presence as long as our money holds out, but their allegiance is not for sale. The snafu in Vietnam where the United States emerges, however inadvertently, as the "overwhelmer" intended to reassure Asians, has, instead, worried them. Enlightened selfishness dictates that we must profit from Britain's immediate example and avoid overextension. Our commitment to a "little war" in Vietnam has gradually involved us in one of the biggest wars we have ever fought Further, we have military commitments with 40 other nations almost identical to the one which involved us in this untenable situation in Vietnam. Britain is admittedly withdrawing from a major world role because of a balance-of- inflation nayments deficit, and her gigantic home-frowelfare burden. Already, similar symptoms of weakness are apparent in the United States: deficit, inflation and a gigantic home-frowelfare burden. The United States, richer than Britain and more nearly will survive the drain and the strain longer; but for us now just to follow Britain's decline without even trying to avoid it amounts to willful balance-of-paymen-ts Business Withoul Really Trying' - PLUS CARTOON h?s died by e sui- us cide should n .i it should, instead, motivate s us to take Britain might have now. been spared much pain if she'd accepted todayfs remedies yesterday.
