Show Butter Market A Home Filth Year No. 63. Telephone 700 Pubilc Enemies No. 1 and No. 2 Plants LOG AX, - Water hemlock Whorled Milkweed Study these weeds and learn to recognize them. It may save the life of your cow or yourself. The water hemlock, on the left, often is confused with the wild parsnip, which Is not poisonous. Yet water hemlock is as deadly as a rattlesnake. It is not native of semiarid climates, but it is found along ditch banks and in moist places on irrigated projects. Note the root, which has been split, has transverse chambers. This is a sure way to recognize the water hemlock. Study its leaves. It will pay you to know the water hemlcck for it is public enemy No. 1 among the weeds. On the right is the whorled milkweed. Note the way leaves grow around the stem. This weed is not as dangerous as water hemlock, but it kills stock every now and then in the west. Get nd of it. It is public enemy No. 2 among the weeds. IIU WEED SHOULD MJJIFIED Reclamation Official says Stock Die as Result of Eating Water Hemlock Prevelent in Cache. t 111 Discovery that water hemlock, a deadly poisonous plant is present on many Federal Reclamation projects resulted today in the issuance of a warning against this weed and a call for its eradication by George O. Sanford, General Supervisor of Operation and for the Bureau of Reclamation. on The water hemlock is new several of the Bureaus projects and many water users are not familiar with it, Sanford said in a letter to E. O. Larsen, Engineer of the Utah project. Two boys of a project town recently lost their lives through which they eating this weed, Santhought was wild parsnip, ford said. Water hemlock is not a native of the fields of semiarid regions. However, it has appeared in irrimoist other gated ditches and places in fields of many sections of the west in recent years. It many along grows unsuspected ditch banks. Even after livestock has died as a result of eating the root, water hemlock is not recognized by the farmer. L. H. Mitchell, field supervisor of the fourth district for the Bureau of Reclanmtion, who has made a study of this weed, and who was in Logan today said water hemlock can be identified positively in several ways. If the root is cut lengthwise, it will be seen that it is divided into transverse chambers. Break a fresh root and a yellowish, oily sap oozes out. An- -j other means of distinction is the, odor of, disagrenable mouse-lik- e the hemlock plant. In company with H. C. Farker, Mr. Mitchell went to Hyrum today and secured a sample of water hemlock along a ditch bank there. It has been placed on exhibition in th window of the Cache American on- - Center street. Cache County Is menthned as participationg In the program being carried out by the state road authorities. This may ail be true but the citizens here will net appreciate roadside beautification so long as leads themselves are in such deplorable condition. How can the motorist enjoy the beauties of the roadside when the roads are so rough that it takes all ones time to hang on to the vehicle in which they are riding? What the motoring public of this section of the state would like the state read commission to do, would be to build at least one highway out of the county that is worthy of the name. The state highway between Logan and Wellsville has been closed since way last fall. All traffic is being detoured via Hyrum. Citizens of College ward are having their patience shattered with the apparent lack of interest on the part of the state to have this werk completed. A trip north from Logan over the state and federal highway, finds the road bed in a very uncondition for public satisfactory travel. Then try going through Logan canyon to Bear Lake. This road is so rough that the occupants of a car would be shaken out of their seats if they were driving cars of the type we once used almost exclusively, called a touring car. The sedan type of car holds the occupants, but what a shakeup. Airplanes will undoubtedly become popular in this section if the read authorities continue to keep our automobile highways in their present condition.
