Everywhere else it was red and yellow and was It October and the brown, for leaves had turned. Ail day long and all night, too, for that matter, there was a gentle rustling all through the Green Forest, for the leaves were falling. Llghtfoot the Deer was becoming uneasy. It was the rustling of the falling leaves that made him uneasy. They had been soft and tender then Now that they were hard there was no further use for the velvet covering, and this Llghtfoot had rubbed off as he polished his antlers. As long as the leaves had re mnlned green eveiy where through the Green Forest, Llghtfoot had been happy and carefree, but now that the leaves had turned to beautiful colors and were dropping, dropping day and night, he grew more and more uneasy and fear crept into his heart. Llghtfoot had a good memory and he had not forgotten the dreadful things which had happened at the time of falling leaves the year before. He knew that the season when hunters with terrible guns would come Into the Green Forest seeking to kill him was close at hand. So his uneasiness grew and grew, and In his beautiful great, soft eyes the look of fear grew stronger each day. Only at night was Llghtfoot free of It. safety. In the early spring his wonderful antlers, which some folks call horns, but which are not true horns, had fallen. Very helpless had Llghtfoot been then, but des plte las helplessness there had been no fear In his heart. You see, he knew that there was no one In all the Green Forest, save Buster Bear, of whom he need be afraid. It was an easy matter to keep out of the way of Buster Bear. Besides, there was little cause to fear Bus ter, for Buster was finding plenty to eat and a full stomach makes for good nature In man and beast So all the long summer Light-foo- t the Deer had lived quietly and In peace while new antlers grew, antlers larger and more beautiful than those he had lost While these new antlers were growing he kept very much by himself. And It occurred to me how true this was from the most practical viewpoint of everyday life. Ideals are regarded as matters almost ephemeral. And yet they are among the most solid, substantial Influences In life. If you stop to think about it, wealth may be very transient. Success mny be transient Fame usually Is transient. But the principles we set for ourselves, the ideals to which we adhere, If we adhere to them strongly enough, are a rock of refuge In a storm. And the point is that our principles and our Ideals are a possession for whose permanence we are dependent on no other person, on no quirks of clr cumstance, but only upon ourselves. The older we grow the more we realize that the things which bring us the most satisfaction In life, the solid, substantial, dependable joys, those which stay and grow with the years, are the fundamental Interests and pleasures like love nf family and old friends. With Mussolini apparently determined to launch a war against Ethiopia within a few weeks, this Is a question which the whole world Is asking. Mussolini has demanded that the ancient African nation humble itself because of alleged misdeeds. Italian subjects along the borders of Eritrea and Italian Somaliland, he has charged, have suffered from raids by Emperor Ilalle Selassies young men. Many of them bae been shot and there has been much plundering Rejecting this on the grounds that these Italian subjects are the same kind of people as the Abjsslnlans, and often have been guilty of a little raiding on their own hook, the experts point to the fact that 11 Duce lias suggested to France and England that he desired to establish a protectorate over a large slice of northeastern Abjssinla. Having Interests In Africa of their own which might be jeopardized, France and England have been cold to tills Idea, Just as they have been cold to the report that the Italian dictator contemplates pushing the Italian Somaliland frontier approximately 90 miles Into Abjsslnlan territory to Include valuable lands and oil wells. Meanwhile the zero hour approaches. It looks as If the fighting Is sure to start some time lu September, and the famous treaty of 'perpetual friendship signed In 1928 between the two nations will go the same way as other treaties have gone Into the oblivion of the waste- basket Already Mussolini Is moving troops into Eritrea and Italian Somaliland, some l.r0,000 being reported there awaiting the zero hour. Tlus tills Italy's forces Include about 60,000 native troops. Will Mussolini be able, to do the Job ahead? The experts, giving consideration to Italy's superior aerial forces and to advancements In military science which she will enjoy, are uncertain. Abyssinia, they point out, need not depend upon armies, but upon her climate and upon wild tribesmen that are as resourceful as were our rebellious Indian tribes more than century ago. Mussolini Is asked to remember that Abyssinia has never been conquered by white men In all her history, and her history dates back to 1478 B. C. Soldiering Is the noblest of professions to your Abyssinian. In times of peace, always has been able, on short notice, to summon as army of 250,000 men. Now, with 11 Duce shaking his list, the Emperor can count on 600,000 men, many of them equipped with modern military rifles. And some un- derstanding of the kind of job that awaits the Italian dictator Is to be found In recent dispatches saying that raw meat was served at a recent feast of Emperor Halle Selassie.
