CACHE AMERICAN 4KU-Vekl- LOGAN, CACHE COUNTY, UTAH CACHE AMERICAN Page Two LSU Taxes Rob the Bread Basket It will do no harm to have a reminder that when the Congress passes laws requiring the expenditure of money, the people will have to pay it. When a deficit exists, it must be met. Temporary borrowings by the Treasury may take care of it for the present, but finally the taxpayers will come to a day of reckoning. Raising tax rates does not seem popular. Imposing a new' levy on small income is anathema to those who vote large appropriations . . . Hut people with small incomes will pay directly in all they buy or use, even if they pay no direct tax. They are the ones who suffer most from government extravagance. The present high rate of taxes, especially state and local assesments, is one of the main reasons small concerns are closing up and their business is going to chain stores and other large corporations. The overhead of taxes is so large that a small business is at a serious disadvantage. That was written three years ago and its author was former President Calvin Coolidge. Since that time, the tax problem has become critical taxes levied by all units of government are rising to the point of confiscation, and government indebtedness has soared to an undreamed-o- f peak. The people will cvntually have to pay the bill every penny of it. California (is furnishing a further example of the national political sport of gas tax boosting. Politicians wish to increase the gas tax from 3 to 4 cents a gallon, which would mean $12,000,000 more a year taken from the pockets of California motorists, in this instance. The excuse for this extra squeeze by the tax octopus, is the need for financing relief bonds. Persons in want must be taken care of. Put why should the burden be loaded onto the motorists? It should be paid by all classes of taxpayers equally. Statistics pust published show that in 1934, the owners of 2,120,000 automobiles in California paid $36,432,612 state gas tax, $12,144,204 Federal gas tax, $10,000,000 (estimated) personal property taxes, registration and other fees, $1,000,000 (estimated) Federal lubricating oil tax or $68,074,167. In addition, new car buyers paid state and Federal sales and excise taxes of about $6,000,000 and those who bought accessories tires, etc., paid state and Federal sales taxes of about $5,125,000. Contract and common carriers paid $1,032,768, or a total for automobile owners of $80,231,935 in one state, for one year. Now they want to take another $12,000,000 from total of $92,231,935 for the motorists, or a super-gran- d one year. And thats the present politcal trend! Tax piled upon tax! Taxes raised to the point of confiscation! When one industry has been bled white, start in on another! ts an insane proposition. If the tax octopus finally crushes the life out of its victim, it will face starvation itself for lack of food to keep the thousands of little suction pumps on its tentacles supplied with nourishment. The octopus of the sea is deadly, as every individual knows, and will crush the life out of a person. lut the tax octopus is more dealy, for it will crush the life out of a state or nation. Let the people beware. $8,-497,3- 51 Publiskid jr anantjtmtnt wttk Four Continued) (Chapter The land was wintry ana tne wir.a But the Goas of destiny act In Oh, it was good to get on deck of whimsical ways.
