G By Earl E Barnes, Agronomist. Ohio WNU Service. Experiment Station. Use Progeny Testing Plan to Pick Best Sires. the United States Department W NU Service. of Auric ulture A good male is teu times as im portant as a good hen In building up a Hook of poultry. For this rea son progeny testing, a method which prepared by enables a poultry breeder to iden tlfy the superior males in his flock Is a necessity to progress in poultrj breeding, says Dr. M. A. Jull, In charge of poultry investigations for the Uniied States Department of Agriculture. Too much significance has been attached to phenomenal records In egg laying contests, according to Doctor Jull, who bases his state meat on the results of a recent ex periment with White Leghorns and Iihode Island Iteds at the Beltsvllle research center of the department at Beltsvllle, Sid. High production records in the ancestry of hens used in a breeding flock are, of course, de sirable but the experiment shows that such records on only one side of the ancestry are not sufficient assurance of high producing pullets On the other hand, three genera tions of good egg production rec ords do give some assurance of good records of the pullets. A hen that produces good laying pullets by one sire may produce pul lets with much lower averages when mated to another sire the next year. This indicates that a hen's value as a breeder is not ahvay shown by the average egg produc tlon of her daughters but depend-als- o on the mating involved. The ability to select superior breeding males is of great importance be cause a sire's influence on a flock is at least ten times as great as that of a hen, as one sire is usual ly mated to ten or more hens. The index of greatest value in determin ing a sire's breeding worth was found to be the average egg produc tlon of all of his daughters. Italy Believed Home of Original Leghorn Fowls The history of poultry reveals that Italy was, undoubtedly, the home of the original Leghorn fowls, says the Montreal Herald Early literature shows that poultry of several kinds was bred at least 3, (XX) years ago, and fowls were used In Itome for food 2,000 years ago. Vegetation Very Like Ours of Today Ice-Ag- e wheat with manure in the winter has proved very beneficial to wheat and to the new seeding. From this practice benefits to the following corn crop also may be expected, according to the results of experiments on seven county and district experiment farms in Ohio. In the experiments the corn and wheat also received broadcast applications of 200 to 300 pounds of 20 per cent superphosphate, and during the winter before the land was plowed for corn, eight tons of manure were applied The amount of top dressing given the wheat tons of manure an averaged 4 acre. Over a period the win ter applications of manure on wheat caused six bushel Increases in yield. The hay crop following the wheat was boosted almost half a ton an acre. Increases In eastern Ohio were considerably larger than In western Ohio. The effect on the corn crop. It Is estimated from an experiment conducted at Wooster, Is to produce a yield 85 to 00 per cent as large as when the manure Is applied to the sod to he plowed down for corn. This method of using manure offers protection to the wheat from heaving during the late winter and early spring, and furnishes the much needed nitrogen In the spring when rapid growth of the wheat plant demands It In dry springs It also adds greatly In conserving moisture In the soil near the surface, a condition which Is almost sure to lead to an excellent stand of clover. An application of manure on wheat is a fundamental soil treatment on farms where difficulty Is encountered In getting a good stand of grass and clover. five-ye- Badly Weathered Hay Is Not Best for Dairy Herd At the federal experimental farm at Beltsvllle. Md cows have been kept continuously on grain and hay rations, with no pasture for a period of seven years. These cows have maintained their health, productiveness and reproductive capacity just as well as cows that had access to pasture during the summer, la all experiments In which green No. 1 hay was used. Alfalfa was used in most of the experiments, but In one case U. S. No 1 timothy was fed, and no bad results of any kind were noticed. However, where poor quality, No. 3 timothy was fed, the cows fell off In milk yield, and many of the calves were born dead. The green hay seems to have good results because of Its high vitamin A content Badly weathered hay has lost much of Its vltamln-A- , and so Is not satisfactory as a feed for dairy cows. Indications resulting from care ful and widespread investigations, are that The Leghorn fowls as they existed in Italy prior to 1815 were a mongrel lot, descended from promiscuous matings, without any attention being paid to color body formation or productivity. The greatest development In the breed has taken place in England, the United States and Canada and it is significant that the high state of development attained In these coun tries has led breeders In the native Cutting Hay Crops home of the Leghorn to import Alfalfa, clovers and other hay specimens for the sole purpose of improving size, stamina, conforms crops should be cut at the usual tlon and productivity not to say stages of maturity this year, even though the drought in many sections profit. has stunted the growth of the plants, says A. Waves cutting into the face of Greenbury point were responsible for Doctor Berrys discovery. The forest is directly across the Severn river from Annapolis. The swamp consisted chiefly of bald cypress trees, believed to have flourished in Pleistocene days. It apparently tilled a deep valley through which ran two ancient streams from one to three feet deep and several feet wide. At the extreme end of the point, and exposed only at low tide, are approximately 23 cypress stumps from two to six or mote feet in diameter. At the dtiTs base is a bed of black clay, in the lower portion of which roots and knees of stumps are so interwoven that they sometimes form a solid wooden floor. Doctor Berry was able to identify several species of vegetation from seeds gathered In the muck. It was pointed out, however, that the ancient vegetation did not differ greatly from that growing In the area today. flve-fo- Ice-ag- e .IRRITATION; due to coUd.
