If that happens, it will be a Happy New Year indeed for the people of half a dozen states and, indirectly, for the entire country. The jobs, payrolls and purchasing power that mining provides in normal times, are vitally needed revival of the industry would take up much of the slack that has resulted from depression. Furthermore, the maintenance of a progressive, prosperous rqining industry is essential to any great power, both in times of peace and times of war. New life in the mines would be one of the best auguries for the future we could have. Aids Seed Potato Indexing Farmers who make a specialty of growing certified seed potatoes know the value of the method of tuber Indexing worked out by the federal and state potato specialists, and note the development of electric hotbeds has made this method more practical in areas where electricity is cheap. Tuber Indexing is a way of weeding out potatoets that carry Infectious virus diseases in the tubers, A commercial grower does not, as a rule, try to Index the tubers for the smaU area he plants to provide his own seed for the following year. To "index" a potato, he cuts out one eye from a selected tuber and grows this sometime during the winter, keeping a record or Index of each eye and of the potato from which It came. If one of the young plants grown in this way shows symptoms of a virus disease, the original tuber is discarded. In the past it has been necessary to plant in pots and grow the test material in a greenhouse and not many growers have found this practical. But T. P. Dykstra of the Bureau of Plant Ihdustry experimenting in Oregon, where electric current is cheap has found that it is practical and satisfactory to test indexed tubers in an electrically heated hotbed. Some commercial growers have followed the lead In Indexing varieties which are especially susceptible to virus diseases but otherwise desirable. Find Hidden Treasure in Hay There may be hidden treasure In some haymows this winter. Farmers who have a supply of timothy hay In the stack or In the haymow should examine it as a source of extra income possible in the form of seed. If the timothy was somewhat overripe for hay when it was cut, it may have enough ripe seed to pay for threshing and yield a neat profit in addition. The 1934 crop of timothy seed was only about 20 per cent of normal. Prices for timothy seed are now exceptionally high. Morgan W. Evans of the Bureau of Plant Industry reports the experience of one Ohio farmer who gained more than $100 unexpected profit from hay he had put in the mow. He refused an offer of $25 for the privilege of threshing the timothy. Instead he had it threshed and has seed that will sell for more than $100. He also has the threshed timothy which he can use for hay. The Department of Agriculture points out that timothy hay is also selling at high prices, and whether it would pay to thresh or not would depend principally on when the stacked or mowed timothy was cut. If cut early when the hay is prime, it will be possible worth more as hay, because there would be few seeds ripe enough to be valuable as seed. But it often happens that the rush of summer work causes a delay In the timothy harvest and the consequent devekjment of seed. In ordinary years It might not pay to thresh such hay for seed, but this Is an abnormal season, timothy seed Is selling at exceptionally high prices, and it is worth any farmers time to examine any timothy he has on hand to find out whether the mow or stack contains hidden treasure in the form of timothy seed. Timothy cut at the best stage for hay will not include much seed. Timothy that is nearly ready for harvest as a seed crop shows distinct heads of approximately straw color. A sample of hay that includes a good many heads might be submitted to an expert thresherman or to the state college of agriculture for advice as to whether it Is worth more for seed than It is for hay. ed Baton Rouge, La., The people were called upon tonight to swarm into Baton Rouge for the next session of the legislature and make the lawmakers do what they want them to do. of Louisiana Announcing that a legal board was digging Into Louisianas hunof statutes, dreds submissively enacted by the legislature at Senator Huey P.
