COMMISSIONERS FAIL TO ACT Taxpayers called the former County Commissioners attention to the above provision in time to act. They either forgot or at least failed to comply with the ordinance. When faced by a Committee of Ten representing 400 taxpayers, they manifested but little interest, and accordingly all salaries were left as they were prior to depression times. . THE REAL YALUE OF $1.00 The employee does not value $1.00 for the reason that it has one hundred cents, but altogether for its purchasing power in lifes necessities. CROOKSTON, CapitolandTheater r the dollar in the East is now from $1.42 to $1.48 above depression times. Out in the West we find it worth more. But leaving the dollar worth but $1.50, the man who was receiving $1,000 prior to the depression is surely handed out $1500 today. Everyone who wants to be fair will concede this fact. There is a lessor who owns a building who rents the same period of years. The depression comes, and the lessee asks for a reduction, and the lessor grants the same. Taxpayers engage an office holder for a certain number of years, and the depression comes and the taxpayer is unable to meet his agreed price with the bfficial. Should the official take into consideration the taxpayers condition, or should he demand the full pound of flesh ? The same answer applies to both conditions. There is no difference that we can see. There are those who seem to think that the price of an office must never be touched. It is eacred and because the office holder knows he can hold the taxpayer to it, is no more reason for his doing so than the lessor should hold the lessee to an agreement which at least temporarily he is unable to live up ta These are thoughts that everyone shoud consider, for we are living in times when the lust and pleasaure of office must not kill, and whep the spoils of office should not buv f J.
