Show Feb. 15, 1952 Yld Cat Valentine Day Brings Cupid Has Fashions on Parade Cupid been knocking at the door of your heart lately? Welf, if he hasnt, hes sure to. This Valentine season seems to be the time when he starts those arrows flying and keeps them going strong way into spring and the rest of the school year. Remember when we were in grammar school? The week before Valentines Day, we would drop our Valentines in the box, one for everyone in the class -especially for that cute boy across the room, and vice versa, (probably someone you cant even stand now). Then there was always one for the teacher - such ! On Valentines Day, or close to it, the teacher apple-polishers- Lovers Festival by Tom Harris The origin of the lovers holiday can be traced back to the anniversary of the death of a Catholic Priest at Rome, and a Bishop at Umbria on Feb. 14. Saint Valentines Day, sometimes referred to as Lovers Festival, is believed to have received its celebrative mood from the Luper-calior Roman Festival which was celebrated on February 15. The ancient custom of gift sending or choosing the mate is derived from both Shakespeare and Chaucer, who said that St. Valentines Day is the day that birds choose their mates and the custom seemed to spread to the human race. In other words, it might be said that loving is strictly for the birds. It was a common belief of bachelors of that time, that the first person of the opposite sex you see on Valentines Day is to be your Valentine for the year or even for life. It was also a common practice to conduct lotteries for the choosing of valentines. a Its Just Not True You are all familiar with the story, that when George Washington was a small boy, he cut down his fathers prize cherry tree. When his father asked him about it, he told him the truth and said, I cannot tell a lie. This did not really happen, along with the tale that he threw a Trouble Didnt Stop Lincoln; Why Us? When Abraham Lincoln was a young man, he ran for Legislature in Illinois and was defeated. He next entered business, failed and spent the next 17 years paying up the debts of a worthless partner. He was in love with a beautiful young woman, became engaged, then she died. Later he married a woman who was a constant burden to him. Entering politics again, he ran for Congress and was badly defeated. He then tried to get an appointment to the United States Land office, but failed. He became a candidate for the United States Senate and was badly defeated. In 1858 he was defeated by Douglas. One failure after another bad failures great setbacks. , Yet in the face of all this, Lincoln eventually became one of the countrys greatest men! So when you feel yourself slipping and feel as if youve had the greatest setback of all, remember that the most famous man, Lincoln, had a lot more trouble. It seems to be a little different nowadays. Instead of a nice cute Valentine, its a box of chocolates, to others it may be a diamond, or still, it may even be that someone has finally won that long, hard battle. Cupid seems to keep himself pretty busy around B. Y. high-e- ven though at times he gets his arrows crossed, but finally gets things patched up. They say, though, that true love never runs smoothly. Exchange Editor Asks Student Aid Have you students seen the many school Exchange newspapers in our library? Many schools in Utah and the Western States send us copies of their papers and we send ours to them. We send about 50 copies to the schools on our exchange lists. These newspapers are being placed in the library for the students. These papers are to be kept in the library and connot be taken out. Miss Berry has given us space on the table in the southeast corner of the Study room. Many students at our school are from out of town and they still have many friends that they would like to read about. This is a fine way to see what are doing your and how they are coming in sporting events. The other school also tell about how their papers schools are run and just what activities the schools have. If any of you students of Brigham Young high school would like to read the papers of the schools you attended last year, contact Vic Taylor, and he will send a letter to your school and ask them to exchange papers with us. by Mary Ann Godfrey What to wear, is the question is the question of most girls going to the Sweetheart Ball. Each girl wants to be as big a hit at the dance as Jerry Lewis is in the movies only much prettier. Chatting with Arnolene Snow and Margaret Hayward, found Arnolene wearing dark purple taffeta with light purple net over it. A crisp flower is worn on the eufed sleeves and tiny belt cuts the top for the full skirt. Margaret celebrating holidating in red taffeta, strapless with net over her shoulders and ballerina skirt has the look of fit and fashion. Joan Bullock in special dress with special date will be seen in a gay whirle of red velvet. Flatteringly low waist line and gathered skirt fit to a cuffed top. Rhinestone neckless and black suede pumps set off a pretty picture. Sure to snare all hearts is Carol Ann Reynolds in turquoise blue gown, made of nylon net. Strapless and stole top fit to a wide skirt rounded with two tiny ruffles. Helen Bauer and Helen Norton will both be bells of the evening. Colors of beige and cinnamon go go with Helen's dark brown hair and eyes. Delicate satin brocade bodice and full floor length skirt rate star billing. Helen, going wonderful places in a wonderful dress, says "come and show-ofyour formal at the dance. f Glub Jlote4 THESPIANS The Thespians Ball held last month was a big success, and now the Thespians are looking forward to next month when the students will have the opportunity of directing and acting in plays to be presented on Thespian night, held every other Thursday. Thespian ring and pin will go on sale soon. The club would also like you to notice Mr. Bunnells haircut. FRENCH CLUB Held their annual Mardi Gras on Feb. 8, and report it was very successful. They had serpentine to throw around and hot to eat. Dancing was held dogs, duringX most of the evening. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The Phoiqgraphy Club has been newly lganized with just the new officers being Lynn Staheli, President; David Wilkinson, Vice President and Meralyn Tolboe, Secretary. These people along with the other club members and Mr. Wilcox! and Mr. Brailsford, faculty advisors, would like to see any one interested in joining. The club has been assigned lockers and the photography equipment is on its way. |
