From Prisoner To President by Harold Heifer Charles A Ward of Saint Paul, Minnesota, recently received a plaque from his employees the like of which probably has been given to no other businessman But to understand this plaque, we must go back a few years Mr. Ward wasn't always the president of Brown and Bigelow, one of the largest calendar and advertising specialty companies in the world, a concern that does some $52,000,000 of business a year. Charles A. Ward, whose business it is to print millions of numericals, once was a number himself. The head of this huge calendar company was a pris- Students Warned To Drive Safely The Safety Council will present their assembly today during the seventh period Mr. Jerald Matthews will be the adult speaker. Denny Jones, the new King Congratulations. of Kings Preferred Man Chosen at B.Y. High It happened in Denver several decades ago Young Charles Ward had always led an adventurous life. A former Seattle, Washington shoeshine boy, he ran away at seventeen and became a sailor, roaming the seven seas, and spending four years in the Alaskan gold fields, too. But what took place in Denver was real trouble Arrested on a charge of possessing narcotics, he said he was framed, but it was no use. He was sent to Leaven- worth Prison for a long term. There he met Herbert Bigelow, another prisoner. Bigelow, in jail as the result of tax troubles, took a liking to the strapping, clean - cut, cheerful young man and was able to overcome many a melancholy moment through his help. Then, when Bigelow was paroled in 1924, he offered Ward a job with his calendar company. Ward took him up on it when he was released from jail some time later, and the friendship between the two men continued. High Band waits for whistle to blow to march. Band Presents Concert B Y. High presented a combined concert of the Senior High Concert Band and the Junior High Cadet Band under the direction of James A. Mason in the Provo Tabernacle at 81 5 p.m., January 27. The Cadet Band, for their part Mystic Gardens by Buchtel, Little Baroque Suite arranged by Gordon, Balladair by Erickson, Oosis by Kepner, and Danse Pavane by Cacavas. The Concert Band played Amparito Roca by Texidor, Overture from La Sultane by Couperin-MilhauBear Dance Irish Tune from by Bartok, Country Derry set for band by Grainger and First Suite in E Flat for Military Band by Holet. It has been only in the 20th century that composers have dis of the program, played d, covered the potenialities of the band as a medium for original concert music as opposed io the ceremonial and untilitarian functions it has served for more than two centuri. Most of the active work along this line has been done in England and in the U.S., Gustav Holsts First Suite in E Flat for Military Band, written in 1909, is the authentic progenitor and foundation stone of the modern repertoire of concert music for band. Bruce has been very active in drama and debate and has held numerous other positions Bert Mitchell also has been prominent in school activities. He has played varsity football and basketball. - |
