Bulldogs It marked the first time in modern history that BY High had ever beaten Provo High in football and the triumph enabled men of Coach the Courtney Leishman to write a successful finish to what would otherwise have been a rather dismal season for them. It was only the second victory of the season against seven defeats. fdr the Wildcats but the triumph more than made up for all the despair and heartbreak a losing campaign had brought them. And much of the credit for what was probably the Wildcats greatest win ever on the gridiron must go to Orton, a whirlwind on offense and a tiger on defense. The senior performer scored on two long and electrifying touchdown runs and booted the extra point that ultimately proved to be the winning margin. His first touchdown came on a dash in the second quaron ter and his second one-ma- 13-1- al stout-hearte- d 0, two-wa- y 92-ya- rd six-point- er g extra point after the first TD. Altogether, Orton gained a total of 200 yards on 15 carries against the defensive forward od. His boot came Daily Herald Sports Writer 160-pou- gallop in the third peri- 75-ya- rd of the Big Green, which went into the game a favorite to rack up its third straight win after suffering six straight defeats in Region Four play. Orton was almost as great on defense as he was on offense, coming up with eight unassisted tackles during the contest. But despite the dynamic performance oif Orton, the Wildcats h had to withstand a furious charge by Coach Dick p Hills gang, which came ever so close to pulling the game out of the fire. But is was a casa of too little and too late for the battling Bulldogs, who as early as the second quarter had marched d down to the BY High line. They couldnt . score on that drive, however, as the Wildcats defensive unit, led by such towers of strength as Mike Eastmond, Bob Johnson, Rick Hintze Shumway, and Scott to halt the fought ferociously attack. driving Big Green Scott Roberts finally got Provo High on the scoreboard in opening moments of the fourth quarter, scoring from two yards out. wall last-ditc- never-give-u- two-yar- Brigham Young High School, Provo, Utah Vol. 25, No. 6 He came back later in the period to slam across from seven yards away. The Bulldogs were aided on the march by a holding penalty against the forWildcats, but the fired-u- p ward wall of BY High slammed the door shut at that point and on fourth down, Johnson made a great defensive play, tossing loss as Greg Faux for a the Provo quarterback dropped back to pass. Provo opened the second quarter with a bang, driving from its own 32 to the Wildcat two on the slam-ban- g running of Jon and Steve Roberts Hoover, 50-ya- rd 15-ya- rd 12-ya- rd Kiger. However, the key play of the run by march was a Kirk Ford, who had dropped back to punt formation on fourth 14-ya- rd but decided to run after getting a low pass from center. The Bulldogs had a first down at the BY 10 during the drive, but the Wildcat defensive unit rose up in all its glory to put the stopper on the Big Green. The Wildcats took over on their own two and two plays later Orton t ok off for the goal line 92 yards away. Orton appeared to be stopped momentarily as he slammed into the center of the line, but all of a sudden he came bounding out of the pack, and was off and running. Provo's Doug Kiger raced downfield after Orton and made a desperation lunge at the flying BY High halfback at the Provo down 25. it appeared as if Kiger touched Ortons heels in his diving attempt, the Wildcat speedster merely kicked his feet forward and kept going in his mad dash for the goal line. After a moment's breather, Orton came right back and booted the extra point to give his team a 0 lead with 5:11 to play in the second quarter. The Wildcats went out in front midway through the third Although 7-- 13-- 0 November 7, 84601 quarter on Ortons 75-ya- rd 1967 dash. On this play, Orton cut over his right tackle, slipped past a few Provo tacklers and then shifted into high gear as he cut for the sidelines. Once again Doug Kiger chased Orton all the way to the goal line in another vain attempt to catch the BY High flyer. Ortons try on the extra point kick was short but the Wildcats led by 13 points. And Provo's hopes dimmed even more when Jeryl Smith intercepted a Big Green pass moments later on his 20 and returned the ball to the 30. But the Bulldogs had just begun to fight, and charged back into the fray with a vengeance and fury that rocked the Wildcats back on their heels and startled their backers no end. Aided by a penalty the Wildcats, the fireagainst breathing Bulldogs reached a frothy pitch as they stormed downfield 70 yards for a touchdown behind the inspiring running of Roberts and Bill Sidwell. Roberts finally blasted in for the TD, but when Atkinsons pass for the extra point failed, the Big Green still trailed by seven 15-ya- points. A defensive play by Martin halted the Wildcats after the ensuing kickoff and gave Provo another chance to go on the attack. great Doug Starting on their own 20 after a clipping penalty on a punt return had set them back 15 yards, the Bulldogs set sail for the goal line 80 yards away. Rod Cloward, who was named Prep Player of the Week for his great play against American Fork a week ago, fired three passes to Hoover and Faux hit Chuck Call with two more and the Bulldogs were knocking at the door again on the Wildcat eight. Roberts carried the ball the remainder of the way to the goal line on the next play, dragging three BY High tacklers into the end zone with him. Atkinson tried to boot the extra point that would have given Provo a 3 tie but broke Cunningham through and got a hand on the ball to deflect it harmless to the side. Provo then tried an onside kick in an attempt to get one more shot at the goal line, but BY High gained possession of the ball and ran out the clock. Then the Wildcats carried Orton the guy mainly responsible for probably the greatest football victory in the schools history off the field on their shoulders. 13-1- A |
