Usually unsatisfactory results come when the trench silo is poorly made and improperly filled. The following points should be considered in the use of the trench silo: (1) Locate where seepage and runoff water wont enter silo. 2) Sidewalls should be slopped one foot inward for each four feet of depth. If this is easier donp, packing is made because the tractor, truck or other implement used for packing can get closer to the edge. There is also less chance for the walls to cave in. Permanent (3) wall lining with concrete is desirable if the silo is to he used over a period of years. (4) Proper packing cannot be In upright silos the great depth gives use to considerable pressure which effectively packs the contents. In the trench silo packing must be done with heavy equipment such as tractors. 5) Air can be more readily excluded from finely cut corn than from coarsely cut. (6) Center of silo should be rounded up three to four feet high and then sealed with wet straw, green hay, or roofing Check stovepipes and flues regularly. Store all medicines, insecticides and drugs away from the kitchen where children cannot reach them. Spread Over Union Many farmers may be acquiring a false sense of security over the threat of Newcastle disease to their poultry flocks, veterinary authorities say. This disease has now spread to every state in the union, and although there is less talk about it today than there was several years ago, the losses it causes are very heavy, the American Foundation for Animal Health reports. "Newcastle disease is second only to pullorum disease in the economic loss it now causes the poultry industry. Vaccines recently developed through veterinary research are proving helpful in controlling the disease, the Foundation said, but vaccination should be considered as an aid to, not a substitute for, strict control measures. If Newcastle disease appears in a Hock, ail dead birds should be burned or buried, and susceptible birds should not be brought to the farm until four weeks or more after the outbreak. Farmers should also take precautions to be sure birds are obtained from sources free of disease. If a lives in an area where the Newcastle disease has not yet become a serious problem, he should undertake vaccination only on the advice of his veterinarian, the Foundation said. flock-owne- INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER MEAWGDGJTIV freezer Youve a host of delicious frozen foods at your beck and call with this heavy duty IH Freezer.
