Forewarned about the roads condition by Editor A. N. fittthe Bear River Valley ing of we drove slowly and Leader, took it easy." But we found that it would take more than slow, carelul driving to ease out Ithe bumps in the road. Editor Rytting made ment.on !of the roads condition in his Shots and Thots colyum a few weeks ago. Sharp Shots believes that the road is in an even worse state than when Mr. Rytting drove over it. Entire sections of the oiled surface have vanished. In place of the oil is loose gravel (not too finely crushed) and base spots of dirt. Adding to these hazards of motoring is the fact ttiat the edges of the oiled stretches are broken so badly that it is almost impossible to drive on your own side of the 'road. There are places where the road has all but washed away and there remains only deep sink holes in place of the shoulders. But worst of all is the unseen" . . . that is, unseen until you are on top of them. These are the big chuck holes. They average in sie to about that of a mans head and vary in depth from af ew inches to a motorist few feet. Should a diop a tire into one of them even w'hile driving slowly, a blowou' would be inevitable. This stretch of highway between Tremonton and Snow-vinis scheduled for a complete going over in the near future, we are told. We hope that actual w'ork on this project begins soon before there are more tires blown out and more fatal accidents. P. S. same highway The across the state line in Idaho is not buch better for the most part. ' wdWSM e i SsCAlsVvvss Sprb. i Utah Federation Of Women's Club Plan Convention At Hyrum on many streets and roads and an attempt has been made to f.!l in the chuck hoies. We use the word "attempt because were it not for the tact that the weather seems to be working against any improvement the city boys make, the fill" they used would be o. k. As a matter of fact, the weather has a lot to do with the condition of our citys streets and A tional and international inter est. the program lor the north ern district convention of Utah-, Federation of Womens clubs now being formulated, accord Hy ing to Mrs. Paul Burgess, lum, district president. for the Principal speaker will be Russell session morning S. Hansen, Logan, and at the same session Mrs. O. Jay Kingston, Murray, president of the state federation, also will speak. Miss Fay g E. Williams, Morgan member of the House of Repiewill sentatives, Utah legislature, address the afternoon session. Other speakers are yet to be named. The district meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 a. m. Satur- countys roads. This past winter (we hope its past!) was one of the worst on record for oiled roads. During the days, the snow would melt and run under the .road through small cracks or via the shoulders. The more sunshine we had, the more moisture would seep under the road. Then at night it would freeze and expand. Along about this time, the roads were subjected to their most heavy traffic. . . . freight of combination trucks. The freezing moisture under the road and pounding tires on top in the of the road resulted breaking up of oiled surface. Then, when the great thaws came, water ran down the hills in miniature rivers, taking soil and silt along with it, and nearly taking some of our roads. To top it all off, this spring, when road repairs are noimally made, the weather took a turn for the worst and prevented crews from getting out to work. After reading about an incident that happened in Pocatello, Idaho, we are beginning to believe that our streets arent so bad after all, A man got his car struck in a chuck hole in one of that citys streets and one of the city trucks had to come to pull it out! The horse-buye- r came back the next morning leading the horse and demanded his money back because the horse was blind. The seller of the horse wanted to know any evidence of the horse being blind, so the following conversation: When I turned him loose in the field he run right smack-dainto a tree.
